Bob Odenkirk, famous for his role as Saul Goodman, has been questioned about a possible return or even a sequel for Better Call Saul. With a 13-year stint playing this character across two shows – starting with a supporting role in Breaking Bad and later starring in its prequel – it’s no wonder fans are curious. However, Odenkirk has since ventured into an entirely new action movie series, the John Wick-style Nobody, with Nobody 2 recently in theaters and potential for more installments. Despite moving on, given Saul Goodman’s enduring popularity, it’s not unexpected that Odenkirk is still fielding questions about his character’s future.
In order to publicize “Nobody 2”, Odenkirk recently appeared on “Today”. During the interview, he discussed the possibility of a future season for “Better Call Saul”. He shared that although nothing is currently in the works, he would be receptive to the idea – as long as Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould were involved. “That role changed my life, and I’ve poured more into it than anything else. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould created that show. They are some of the most talented TV writers out there. So if they came up with something in that world, of course I would be interested,” he stated.
In a recent statement, Odenkirk acknowledged that the possibility of another Saul show is slim since the creators have shifted focus onto other projects. However, there’s an interesting twist – the ending of Better Call Saul left Saul in prison, and as Odenkirk put it, “He’s not getting out. If there’s another Saul show, it takes place inside prison.” While a prison-set show might seem unlikely, it’s not entirely impossible given the potential for it: Jimmy McGill’s fellow inmates were seen to admire him as Saul, which could offer insight into his life behind bars and what he experiences within the prison system.
As a dedicated movie reviewer, I must admit that while watching Better Call Saul’s gripping finale, I couldn’t help but ponder about Kim Wexler’s (Rhea Seehorn) subsequent journey. Was she still dropping by Jimmy’s (Saul Goodman’s) prison visits? The series wrapped up quite impressively, so naturally, there might be apprehensions if talk of a continuation ever surfaces. However, let me assure you, the same hesitations were echoed when Better Call Saul was initially introduced, and boy, did it pay off! So, while reservations are valid, I’m optimistic about what lies ahead if a sequel is in the cards.
The chance of its comeback is not immediate, but it’s possible in the future. Starting November 7, 2025, Gilligan’s latest production, Apple TV+’s PLUR1BUS, featuring Seehorn, will premiere. Previously in 2023, Gilligan mentioned a potential return to the Breaking Bad universe if his current show fails and the audience longs for more of that realm, stating “never say never.” Similarly, Gould expressed a similar sentiment, telling the L.A. Times in the same year: “Vince and I decided it would be beneficial to give the Gilliverse a break. However, we had a large board full of ideas or scenes that we found interesting or fun – and there were still many of them on that board when we wrapped up the show. Perhaps it’s a good thing, though. Leaving something unfinished may mean there’s more to explore.
If another series were to be produced, it’s unlikely that it would center around Saul. A more probable scenario might involve a spin-off series centered on Gus Fring, which Giancarlo Esposito has shown interest in, although it seems challenging for Odenkirk to participate in this. Nevertheless, whether it’s Saul, Gus, or another character, if Gilligan and Gould are involved, there’s a high likelihood that the show would succeed.
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are both available to stream on Netflix.
