Bobby Bones isn’t dancing around his feelings.
Tom Bergeron, the former host of Dancing With the Stars, said he was so surprised when Bobby won season 27 that he returned his Mirrorball trophy. Bobby has now shared that Bergeron’s comments deeply affected his mental health and made him feel negatively about his experience on the show.
He said on his podcast, Bobbycast, on November 22nd, while talking with Dancing with the Stars winner Kaitlyn Bristowe, that he generally loves his time on the show and considers it one of the best experiences of his life. However, he explained that some very passionate fans have negatively impacted his feelings, and he even had a bit of a breakdown about a week and a half ago related to Tom Bergeron.
Bobby Estell, known as Bobby, said he still has feelings for Tom, but was surprised by Tom’s remarks – especially because of when and how Tom brought them up.
Bobby was surprised by the question about the most shocking elimination, because they didn’t ask him about his own experience. He added that if they had asked ‘Who was a surprising winner?’, he would have been happy to share his thoughts.
He admitted he was full of surprises, saying, “I really do think I’m the most surprising person ever.” He explained he fully understood everything that was happening, then referenced a surprising victory, adding with a hint of pain, “You know, when Bobby won? That really hurt.”
Bobby said he was hurt by comments Tom made before returning to the Dancing with the Stars ballroom for the 20th anniversary. He explained that Tom had been a great support during the show, especially knowing Bobby was having a difficult time.

After making his comments, Tom—the former host of Dancing with the Stars, which he left in 2019 after almost 20 years—personally apologized to Bobby, who won the show with his partner, Sharna Burgess.
Tom messaged Bobby on November 13th, saying he didn’t mean to upset him. He explained that his comment about being hurt was simply his honest reaction to feeling like the voting system – specifically how judges and viewers weigh in – needed to be looked at after Bobby’s win.
Even though Tom apologized, Bobby explained on his podcast that he wasn’t holding a grudge, despite being genuinely hurt by Tom’s comments. He clarified, “I still love Tom, but it really stung.”
Even though Bobby’s surprising victory is brought up whenever the finale of Dancing with the Stars nears, he doesn’t regret participating. In fact, watching his performances again recently, he even thinks his dancing wasn’t so bad!
He insisted he wasn’t as flawed as people led him to believe. He felt a sense of pride because he hadn’t fallen as short of expectations as he’d been led to think.
Who will win the mirrorball trophy after Bobby? We’ll find out on November 25th! Until then, let’s revisit all the celebrities who competed on season 34 of Dancing with the Stars.
