Bone Lake Cast and Director Reveal How This Movie Is Truly an Erotic Horror Film

Bleecker Street’s Bone Lake brings back a type of horror that’s become uncommon: erotic horror. The movie centers on Sage, played by Maddie Hasson, and Diego, played by Marco Pigossi, a couple who are taken aback when they discover another couple has also booked the same weekend Airbnb. As the four of them get acquainted, things quickly become intense-and unsettling in multiple ways.

Russ Milheim from TopMob attended the premiere of Bone Lake and chatted with the cast and director about how well the film delivers on its promise as a sensual horror story. We spoke with the incredibly talented team behind the movie, including Andra Nechita (Cin), Alex Roe (Will), Maddie Hasson (Sage), Marco Pigossi (Diego), and director Mercedes Bryce Morgan.

Bone Lake will be released in cinemas on October 3, 2025. If you enjoy terrifying horror films, you might also like Justin Long’s movie featuring deadly coyotes.

Bone Lake Cast and Director Reveals How This Movie Lives Up to the Erotic Horror Film Sub-Genre

“It’s Blood, It’s Gory, and It’s Spicy [and] Sexy.”

  • TopMob: “This movie is an erotic horror film, which I feel like is rare these days. So what can you say about how you feel this movie really lives up to that kind of movie and is unique amongst that category?”

Andra Nechita: I believe ‘Bone Lake’ successfully blends many different genres. It’s an erotic thriller, yes, but it incorporates a little bit of everything. It’s simply a really enjoyable experience – it’s over-the-top, playful, amusing, and occasionally quite dark. There’s also plenty of blood, gore, and it’s definitely spicy [and] sexy.

Alex Roe: I was just thinking-when did ‘Basic Instinct’ come out? Was that in the 90s? That time period felt a lot more openly sensual than things are now. I feel like things have become a little less daring. And something that really stood out to me in the script was how unapologetically sexy it was, and I think that’s great, it’s perfectly fine. I think it’s also funny and scary, and the movie just builds tension so well, leading to a climax that everyone I’ve talked to has really enjoyed after seeing it.

Maddie Hasson: I think the first 30 seconds, or however long the opening sequence is, really delivers on what you’d expect-I won’t give anything away. It also stands out because it leans into a kind of playful, over-the-top style that you don’t see as much these days

Marco Pigossi: I do think so, because the film has a strong sensual quality. It’s a really, really sensual film. It doesn’t focus on explicit sex, but it’s very evocative. That sensuality is central to the story. It’s about two couples and the complex interplay between them, especially their struggles with communication – something many of us experience in relationships. It explores the question of whether we truly have everything we need, and that feeling that things might be better elsewhere. The film plays with these ideas, which is why I see it as a sex thriller, but in a more sophisticated way. I think the sensuality is presented beautifully.

Mercedes Bryce Morgan: As a total movie buff, I’ve always loved those ’90s erotic thrillers, and I really wanted to recapture that vibe, but with a modern twist. What bothered me about a lot of those older films is that they often seemed to punish women for being sexual. It was always like, she’s attracted to someone, therefore she’s causing problems. I wanted to make something different. In my film, we show both female and male nudity – everyone is sexual, and everyone is just exploring that part of themselves. It’s about embracing sexuality, not punishing it.
