Bonnie Langford reveals how she convinced beloved Doctor Who companion to take role

I was so surprised to learn that Bonnie Langford, a Doctor Who icon, actually played a part in getting another companion on the show! Apparently, she was the one who talked them into accepting the role, which is amazing to me. It really shows how much of a positive force she is, even behind the scenes.

She remembered meeting him for lunch, and he told her he’d been offered the role of Doctor Who but wasn’t sure if he should take it. She strongly encouraged him to accept, telling him it would be a fantastic and ongoing opportunity.

“And he did! In the end, we ended up doing a scene together, and I was just so pleased.”

Bradley Walsh first appeared in Doctor Who as Graham, the grandfather of Ryan, played by Tosin Cole. Both characters departed the show together in the 2021 New Year’s Day special, ‘Revolution of the Daleks’.

Both Langford and Walsh returned to play their characters in Jodie Whittaker’s last episode, “The Power of the Doctor.” This episode included a heartwarming scene where many of the Doctor’s companions from the show’s 62-year run came together again.

I was so surprised when they asked me to come back! I really didn’t think it would happen, but I was thrilled to get that call from Chris Chibnall, who was running the show at the time.

She paused, thinking about how things might have been different. “I imagine Mel would have been much more relaxed,” she said. “A lot calmer, really, and very focused on her computers, but she’d keep her work private.”

She was incredibly loyal to the Doctor. I’ve always been glad I stayed in touch with Mel, and I often find myself wondering about her life and how she’s maintained her bond with the Doctor.

“So then when I came to do it in the new TV series, it felt really comfortable to be with her.”
