It has been confirmed that Danny McBride will no longer be involved with Booster Gold’s future, as David Jenkins, the creator of HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, has been chosen to write the pilot episode for the upcoming DC Studios series about the time-traveling hero from the 25th century. In a recent Instagram post, Jenkins announced that he will be taking over the duties on Booster Gold from McBride, who previously co-created HBO’s sports comedy Eastbound & Down and created and starred in the HBO dramedy The Righteous Gemstones (which also features future Superman actor Skyler Gisondo).
Jenkins shared that they’re creating a pilot centered around an adorable klutz for HBO Max! They expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with James Gunn and continue work on a project previously handled by Danny McBride, whom they admire greatly as inspirational figures in their creative journey.
As a passionate movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that the creative mind behind our beloved “Our Flag Means Death” series has enthusiastically endorsed James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, which is set to kickstart the new DC Universe. His infectious excitement is palpable as he exclaims, “Superman returns, full of fun and even has a furry companion! Let’s get ready for an exciting ride!
Initially, Gunn, who jointly holds the positions of co-chairman and co-CEO at DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, known for producing movies like ‘Aquaman’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’, disclosed a live-action series on HBO Max during the unveiling of the DCU slate (named Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters) in 2023. In February of this year, Gunn and Safran hinted they were looking for a specific showrunner or creator to lead the series without specifically mentioning James Gunn’s collaborator, McBride.
Reflecting on the situation, I admitted that perhaps his feelings changed or he became engrossed in other matters, leading us to adjust our plans. This revelation emerged a few months following Gunn’s remarks on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he stated, “Regarding Booster Gold, we’re not quite at that stage yet. We’re still not quite there.
Gunn clarified that the scripts aren’t quite perfect yet in their current state. Since the start of this DC project, he has emphasized that we will only move forward with filming once the screenplays and teleplays are fully developed to his satisfaction. He is not willing to commence shooting until he is completely happy with the script.
On Wednesday, Deadline announced that Dan Jenkins is scripting the pilot and will oversee the series if HBO Max decides to greenlight Booster Gold. Originally created by Dan Jurgens for the 1986 issue #1, Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, a beloved character, was described as a washed-up athlete from the future who uses his futuristic gadgets to masquerade as a superhero during the DC Studios slate presentation in 2023.
In simpler terms, Gunn is describing the series as exploring the theme of a character who pretends to be a superhero but struggles with feelings of inadequacy. The character tries to win people’s love through advanced technology, but ultimately discovers what truly matters. This will be a unique take on character development for a show, and they are currently discussing this role with an actor. Despite speculation online, it doesn’t appear that Kumail Nanjiani is the chosen actor.
Previously, HBO Max showcased two adult animated series created by Gunn – “Creature Commandos” and “Peacemaker”. Both of these shows are currently working on their second seasons. Next year, HBO’s “Lanterns” will be HBO Max’s next DC Studios series, premiering in 2026.
