The lukewarm response to Borderlands 3 has led Gearbox Entertainment to revisit their traditional style, with Borderlands 4 anticipated to bring a major overhaul to the renowned looter shooter series. The introduction of fresh Vault Hunters, a new planet, and a new main antagonist will drive the storyline forward. Numerous gameplay changes are also in store, including expanded character abilities and weapon customization options, making Borderlands 4 a significant improvement over its predecessor.
New Vault Hunters
In our article titled ‘10 Crucial Points Unveiled Thus Far‘, we presented information about two of the new characters in Borderlands 4 – Vex the Siren and Rafa the Eco-Soldier. Since then, Gearbox Entertainment has disclosed more details on the fourquel’s additional Vault Hunters: Harlowe the Gravitar and Amon the Foreknight.
Harlowe, a combat scientist, is the first character we will introduce. She specializes in bringing technology and gadgets to the battlefield. Her intellectual prowess, coupled with her ever-optimistic demeanor, makes her an intriguing addition to your team.
Amon, on the other hand, is a seasoned survivor who dons a gruff exterior but possesses deep thoughts and introverted tendencies. He remains unwavering in his duties and is relentless in hunting down as many beasts as he can encounter.
Harlowe’s unique skills
Harlowe the Gravitar is equipped with powers similar to telekinesis, enabling her to lift opponents into the air and slam them back down onto the ground. As she grows more proficient, she’ll be able to capture multiple enemies simultaneously, making it a spectacle when dealing with large groups. Her toolkit includes the Flux Generator and Chroma Accelerator – the former being a mine with a broad range that can explode after charging, while the latter is a forward-blasting projectile with an explosive charge. Both of these weapons will afflict enemies with ‘Entanglement’, causing damage dealt to spread amongst all enemies entangled in Harlowe’s web.
Amon’s unique skills
Amon’s Forgeskill changes depending on the action skill he equips: Onslaught, Scourge, or Crucible. With Onslaught activated, Amon’s Forgefist overheats, offering continuous shield reinforcement while releasing Molten Slam – a powerful hammer strike that inflicts burning melee damage. Scourge equips Amon with a protective Forgeshield that absorbs incoming frontal attacks, as well as an extra Firewall ability to block enemy missiles. Lastly, Crucible empowers Amon with a throwable Forgeaxe that causes elemental melee damage when double-edged.
New planet: Kairos
The upcoming Borderlands 4 features Kairos, a vast universe that Gearbox claims is their largest creation yet, marking a departure from the ‘hub-and-spoke’ design of previous Borderlands titles. Instead, Kairos offers an open-world experience with four distinct biomes. Fadefields are lush and green, shown in gameplay previews. Cardcadia Burn is a scorching desert landscape with mesas and deep canyons. Terminus Range is home to ancient secrets, featuring windblown mountain passes and blinding snowstorms that are as treacherous as the enemies lurking within. Dominion serves as a looming testament to the Timekeeper’s power (more on them later). Its capital city is a blend of wealth and oppression, with its inhabitants yearning for freedom.
Expanded traversal
Expanding on the openness of Borderlands 4 includes a wider range of foot movements such as double jumps, gliding, grappling hooks, and swimming, giving players more diverse freedom for exploration and combat compared to Borderlands 3. Gearbox also incorporates this openness into smaller battle arenas by allowing multiple entry points, making the use of gliding and grappling hooks key in catching enemies off guard.
New vehicle summoning
In the event that the urge to venture beyond familiar horizons arises, Borderlands 4 introduces a novel, call-up-anywhere hovercraft named the Digirunner. This versatile ride functions as both your personal taxi and a mobile artillery unit equipped with a forward-mounted cannon. The Digirunner offers a lot of room for personalization through unlockable Hover Drives that let you tweak everything from its appearance, to handling and weaponry.
The deepest skill tree
In “Borderlands 4,” each character, or Vault Hunter, will have access to three skill trees that are more intricate, varied, and sprawling than any previous game in the series. These skill trees are divided into a central core with essential skills and abilities, and then branch out into three distinct sections that cater to the unique traits of each Hunter. The numerous Action Skills, Augments, and Capstones (the strongest skills found only in “Borderlands 4”), offer an immense array of options, allowing for both individual and cooperative play experiences with synergies being a key focus for Gearbox Software.
The Timekeeper
In our previous discussion, we introduced the character who serves as the main antagonist in Borderlands 4 – the Timekeeper, a ruler of Kairos. He wields his cybernetic enhancements to exert oppressive control over the robotic soldiers of the Order faction and keeps an eye on the citizens of Dominion City. Although the Timekeeper was hinted at in Borderlands 3 as a Vault Monster, specific details are still being kept secret. However, there’s a popular speculation that the Timekeeper may have the ability to manipulate time, considering his name suggests this power.
Points of interest
In Kairos’ expansive world, there are numerous attractions that can be captured by the Crimson Resistance, a rebellious group struggling against the oppressive rule of the Timekeeper. These attractions encompass various engaging activities such as:
1. Silos featuring exciting zipline adventures and the summoning of mid-air vehicles.
2. Safe houses that, upon recapture, grant new fast travel locations.
3. Fortresses to seize control of.
4. Lost loot machines to retrieve – each accomplishment further weakening the Timekeeper’s stronghold.
Other (new) side activities
As a hardcore gamer diving into the chaos of Borderlands 4, I’ve discovered a fresh load of side activities that keep me hooked! One of these new additions is the Crawlers – intriguing puzzles that challenge you to find a way to slot batteries into specific locations. The game also introduces dynamic open-world events, like the return of Rift Champions loaded with valuable loot drops, and air raid ships offering unpredictable challenges and generous rewards. It’s non-stop action and excitement!
New weapon manufacturers
Order, Ripper, and Daedalus. The Order weapons are precision, high-tech armaments used by the Timekeeper’s army. Ripper guns require a brief spin-up time before firing continuously. Daedalus weapons are known for their reliability, ease of use, quick reloading speed, and versatility, offering a wide variety of firearms from burst-fire pistols to shotguns and SMGs, capable of using various ammo types.
Licensed Parts System
In the upcoming game, Borderlands 4, a fresh feature called the Cross-Manufacturer Components System has been introduced. This means that weapons within the game can be created and customized with components from various manufacturers. For instance, a Daedalus SMG could sport a Jacobs part that makes bullets bounce off surfaces. This system offers a vast array of possibilities for weapon personalization and customization, with rarer weapons being able to accommodate more parts.
Legendary drop rework
Enhancing the Licensed Parts System is paired with modifications made by Gearbox Entertainment to the Legendary Weapons, especially their drop rate. The goal of these changes is to make Legendary weapons feel more distinctive and extraordinarily powerful when fired. Initially, the overpowering sensation was weakened due to too frequent Legendary weapon drops in Borderlands 3, leading to the rework.
New drone companion
In our article titled ’10 Key Details About Borderlands 4 So Far’, we mentioned ECHO-4, a new companion character that not only offers guidance but also has the unique ability to change a Vault Hunter’s appearance from any location, and even adjust inventory management features such as increasing ammunition capacity.
No Mayhem Mode
Following the conclusion of Borderlands 3, Mayhem Modifiers introduced intricate difficulty enhancements that catered to players seeking additional challenges. However, as per the Creative Director of Borderlands 4, these changes didn’t yield substantial effects, thus they won’t be reintroduced. Instead, Gearbox is concentrating on developing Borderlands 4’s endgame around enhancing builds through action skills and damage pipelines. The objective is to engage players in crafting effective builds and weapon customization. In essence, Borderlands 4 aims for a challenging endgame, featuring dedicated drops, elevated level caps, and numerous aspects designed to enhance combat and offer fresh challenges.
