Gearbox Entertainment, makers of Borderlands 4, have recently shared additional details about the PC version of their upcoming game. On their official website, they’ve unveiled a comprehensive list of graphics settings that players can adjust, and also disclosed several accessibility features available for use. Beyond earlier hardware requirements and CEO Randy Pitchford’s insights into the game’s performance, this new information provides a deeper look at the PC version of Borderlands 4.
The graphics settings can vary from fundamental, such as adjusting resolution and display mode, to intricate, offering users a wide array of choices for various types of resolution enhancement, image enhancement, LOD (Level of Detail) options, and post-processing effects. Additionally, players have the ability to tweak finer details within the game’s settings, including granular adjustments like volumetric fog and cloud density, shadows cast by volumetric clouds, reflection quality, and even foliage density.
In terms of accessibility, Borderlands 4 offers a variety of options to cater to different players. These range from basic features like subtitles, to more specialized ones for colorblind individuals dealing with deuteranopia, protanopia, or tritanopia. For those with auditory sensitivities such as tinnitus, there are audio adjustments available. Furthermore, players can customize their gameplay experience by toggling crouching and sprinting, or disabling head-bob, all of which contribute to making the game more comfortable for a wide range of players. To sum it up, Borderlands 4 offers an extensive array of accessibility options, including ones for core gameplay like difficulty settings.
Alternative adjustments available for players’ preference encompass a variety of audio level controls, such as the ability to adjust music and dialogue volumes independently, along with finer options for tweaking the music volume according to different scenarios. Moreover, you’ll find the amusing character-specific volume slider for dialogue by Claptrap included among these settings.
This week, Pitchford expressed concerns on social media about how Borderlands 4 might be nearly impossible to play for PC users who don’t have hardware strong enough to meet the game’s requirements. After reading an early preview of the game, Pitchford was astonished that it even ran on the player’s system, let alone managed to maintain smooth frame rates between 55 and 60 FPS.
Pitchford stated that if you’re using a computer below the minimum specifications, it should be expected that the game will be virtually unplayable. The fact that the game even runs on your system is surprising, and achieving 55-60 frames per second during heavy combat is truly remarkable, considering the complexity of the engine and what’s happening under the hood.
Initially, the author of the preview had been experiencing software troubles, but he later conceded that the problems stemmed from a faulty power supply unit in his computer. This malfunction caused performance issues for the PC, even though it was equipped with hardware far exceeding the minimum requirements. After repairing the PSU, the game has since operated without any hitches.
The game “Borderlands 4” is set to be released on September 12, available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It has also been confirmed that a version for the Nintendo Switch 2 will follow, but it’s due out on October 3. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect from this upcoming looter shooter: more chaos, movement, and treasure than ever before.
