Despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics for Borderlands 3, many long-time fans of the series found themselves dissatisfied. Following the previous installment’s underwhelming performance, anticipation for Borderlands 4 has been tinged with cautious excitement. Initial glimpses at the gameplay hinted that this could be a comeback for the franchise. Now, early reviews are coming in, and it appears that Borderlands 4 might deliver on the expectations of its devoted fanbase, as indicated by the Metacritic Score.
Prior to the scheduled launch of Borderlands 4 on September 12th, critiques have started coming out, with Metacritic reporting an initial Metascore of 84 for the game. This score positions it within the “Generally Favorable” category, not quite reaching the caliber of Game of the Year nominees, but still respectable. It scores a few points higher than Borderlands 3’s 81, but the reviews suggest that it’s more than just the numbers that indicate Borderlands 4 is meeting and even exceeding fans’ expectations. Early feedback indicates that the game will bring back elements that made earlier installments in the series beloved among fans.
Critics Praise Borderlands 4 As a Return to Form for the Franchise
Many enthusiasts of the ‘Borderlands’ series, particularly those fond of ‘Borderlands’ and ‘Borderlands 2’, felt a bit disappointed with the third installment. The game shifted the art style in a manner that many fans found less appealing, and it didn’t quite measure up to the narrative depth players had grown accustomed to from the franchise. Compared to previous games, there was also less diversity in gameplay. However, despite ‘Borderlands 3’ receiving mixed reviews, there was optimism for ‘Borderlands 4′ reviving the series’ beloved aspects. It appears that Gearbox has successfully delivered on these expectations.
Initial responses for the anticipated release of Borderlands 4 are overwhelmingly positive, commending it as a revisitation of the franchise’s original strengths. Some enthusiasts have even gone as far as proclaiming that this game is the long-awaited redemption the series required, suggesting that Gearbox Software has taken previous criticisms to heart and made improvements accordingly. With its focus on enhancing the success of Borderlands 2 while rectifying mistakes from its immediate predecessor, players can expect all the anarchy, entertainment, and gripping narratives they craved, complemented by innovative new gameplay elements to keep the experience fresh.
To date, only the PC version of the game has a Metacritic Score available. Therefore, the console versions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 may receive slightly varied ratings as they are released. It’s also possible that the user score could differ from the critic’s opinions, similar to Borderlands 3. However, thus far, it seems that this installment might be the triumphant return fans have been anticipating for Borderlands 4.
