Gearbox Entertainment recently shared details on the performance improvements they’ve made to Borderlands 4. These updates, driven by player feedback, focus on boosting frame rates without significantly impacting the game’s graphics quality.
The studio’s main goal is to boost frame rates without negatively impacting how players enjoy the game. They’ve successfully increased average frame rates by about 20% on systems with different levels of hardware, from the minimum requirements to the recommended specs.
So, I’ve been checking out the performance improvements in Borderlands 4 after the 1.5 update, and wow, they’ve made a big difference! They released some graphs showing frame rates on different PCs. At the lowest settings, running at 1080p, I was getting around 53 FPS when the game first came out, but now I’m hitting about 67 FPS. If my PC meets the recommended specs and I’m playing at 1440p, I jumped from 64 FPS at launch to almost 76 FPS now. And for those of us with beefier machines – I’m running an RTX 4080 – the improvement is even more noticeable, going from around 87 FPS to over 107 FPS. It’s a seriously smoother experience now!
At its launch, the game achieved 37.32 frames per second (FPS) with the minimum required hardware. After an update to version 1.5, that number improved to 52.79 FPS. With the recommended hardware, performance increased from 44.89 FPS to 56.54 FPS. And on a PC equipped with an RTX 4080 graphics card, the game now runs at 78.43 FPS, up from 54.96 FPS previously.
The company announced a roughly 20% increase in average frames per second (FPS) thanks to improvements across the game’s graphics processing unit (GPU), central processing unit (CPU), and overall efficiency. The Optimization Team pinpointed specific tweaks to boost performance without significantly impacting visual quality. These changes included improvements to Shader Pipeline State Objects, how the game’s drivers handle random weapon parts, and the Hierarchical Level of Detail system, which controls how distant objects are rendered.
To improve performance in Borderlands 4, the developers made numerous small adjustments to the game’s graphics. They simplified things like thruster effects, skill animations, and world event visuals to increase frame rates. They also reduced the stress on computers by optimizing effects like Cryo damage, physics calculations, and how cloth moves. Finally, the team used Unreal Engine 5’s Virtual Shadow Maps to enhance lighting while lessening the load on graphics cards.
The studio shared that they’re pleased with the progress made to improve how Borderlands 4 runs on PCs since its release, but also acknowledge there’s still work to be done. They’re committed to continuing to improve the game over time.
We’re making these changes while still letting players customize their graphics settings to match how they like to play, using the options already available in the game and through their graphics cards.
Borderlands 4 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Although a version for the new Nintendo Switch (Switch 2) was initially in the works, it has been delayed. Recent reports indicate that Gearbox Entertainment has put the Switch port on hold.
