Responding to concerns about the performance of Borderlands 4’s pre-release build on lower-end PC hardware, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford advises PC users to manage their expectations if their systems don’t meet the minimum requirements. On platform X, Pitchford stated that users with hardware below the minimum specifications should anticipate Borderlands 4 as potentially unplayable. He also emphasized that the day one patch for the game will make a significant improvement.
In simpler terms, Pitchford stated that running a game on a machine below minimum specifications should not be expected to work properly. It’s surprising that the game even runs on your system at all, and achieving 55 – 60 frames per second during heavy combat is truly remarkable, considering the complexity of the engine and what’s happening underneath.
It’s not clear from your specification whether you’re using an SSD or HDD. This could potentially explain some of the slowdowns you’re experiencing. It’s important to note that older hardware may struggle to handle the high-performance demands of modern AAA games, just as it has always been since PC gaming first began.
In response to Scott Duwe’s review article for Borderlands 4 on Destructoid, where he stated that his system (an Intel Core i7-12700K at 3.60 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070) far exceeded the minimum hardware requirements for Borderlands 4 and played it on a Low preset at 1080p, Pitchford commented. However, subsequent updates to Duwe’s article were made due to technical difficulties he experienced during gameplay, which in turn affected the performance of the game itself.
Duwe pointed out in his recent updates that his computer’s power supply unit had malfunctioned, causing significant issues while playing Borderlands 4. After replacing the faulty part, the problems he was experiencing seem to have vanished, suggesting that the power supply unit was at the heart of most of his difficulties. Currently, Duwe is enjoying consistent frame rates ranging from 58 to 61 frames per second, except during intense fight scenes.
2K Games and the developers behind Borderlands 4 announced the system requirements for playing the game back in June. As per their listings, players will need at least an Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a choice between an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card to run the game. However, for optimal performance, they suggest upgrading to either an Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X processor, 32 GB of RAM, and a choice between an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card.
The much-anticipated Borderlands 4 is due to arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 12. For Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts, the game will become available on October 3. If you’re excited for
On Day 1, the patch performs remarkably well! However, if your machine doesn’t meet the minimum requirements, it’s important to understand that the game might be virtually unplayable. In fact, if the game manages to run on your system at all, consider it a marvel. Even achieving 55 – 60 frames per second during heavy combat is truly impressive, considering the engine’s demands…

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been cruising through levels 58-61, with a few bumps along the way – except when things get chaotic, which happens now and then. But don’t worry, those hiccups are promised to be smoothed out in the day one patch!
