As Gearbox Entertainment gears up for the launch of Borderlands 4, its CEO, Randy Pitchford, has hinted at further developments for the spin-off game Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. In a conversation with All Out Gaming, Pitchford shared that the team’s passion for fantasy makes it likely we will witness more of this spin-off in the future.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on an intriguing conversation I had recently that took me back to the inception of the spin-off series from the Borderlands universe. It was all kicked off by the captivating DLC for Borderlands 2 titled “Assault on Dragon Keep.” In this delightful expansion, Tiny Tina transformed into a charismatic Dungeons & Dragons-style game master, leading players through an immersive adventure filled with fantastical creatures. This remarkable DLC would later find its own footing as a separate standalone game.
Pitchford expressed, ‘It seems like we’re only scratching the surface here.’ He shared his passion for fantasy genre, mentioning that their team is equally enthusiastic about it. The journey began with the expansion of Borderlands 2 titled Assault on Dragon Keep, where Tiny Tina serves as the game master, or ‘bunker master’ in their in-universe tabletop RPG called Bunkers and Badasses. Needless to say, they truly enjoy it.’
Pitchford discussed Bunkers and Badasses, which is similar to tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons in the Borderlands universe. He highlighted how this setup provided a fantastic structure for exploring additional fantasy-themed journeys while maintaining the unique gameplay and mechanisms of Borderlands.
In simpler terms, Pitchford shared that they took elements from the success of “[the Bunkers and Badasses]” – a style of gameplay initially introduced in the looter shooter game “Borderlands” – and applied it to a fantasy setting for the first time, integrating gun combat into sword fights. He enthusiastically described this venture as an exhilarating experience, even going as far as to say “What a joy! Holy s, we went absolutely wild and had such a blast!” Ultimately, he was pleased to find that their approach proved effective.
Despite the fact that “Assault on Dragon Keep” proved to be a hit, Pitchford admitted that creating the sequel “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” was a daring move for the studio. However, given that the newer game has also garnered success, he now considers it not as a risk, but as a foothold for future development. In his words, “I would wager that we will spend more time on that.
In July 2024, Pitchford discussed Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, expressing his view that the fan reaction to the game and the possibility of a sequel would likely be “favorable.
He noted that the initial Wonderlands game yielded a larger success compared to the first Borderlands game, providing a strong foundation for future developments. Given his fondness for fantasy, he spearheaded the creation of the original Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2. Many at Gearbox share this affection for fantasy, and it offers an ideal setting for exploring these themes within the Borderlands universe. Therefore, it’s understandable that fans may anticipate further expansions in this realm.
Back in 2022, Pitchford also announced that there were plans for additional installments of “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.” Interestingly, whispers from 2024 suggested that the sequel to this subsequent game might be undergoing a “soft reboot” during its production phase.
