Borderlands 4’s 1st DLC Vault Hunter has been revealed — this gambling, robot gunslinger may be the character to finally convince me to jump back into Borderlands after a decade

Tokyo Game Show 2025 is wrapping up, but there’s still exciting news! Randy Pitchford from Gearbox Software unexpectedly announced the first story expansion pack for Borderlands 4, which is scheduled to release in 2026.

I just saw a new trailer – it’s a sneak peek at the first downloadable content for the game, called Vault Hunter. And it looks like C4SH is going to be the character featured in the expansion!

Here is what we know so far about this mysterious gun slinging robotic Vault Hunter.

Randy Pitchford explained that C4SH was originally a casino robot designed to deal cards. It saw firsthand how gambling could lead to both great fortune and devastating losses for players.

But one day, a turning point made C4SH question what he was doing with his life. This ultimately led him to leave his casino job and become a Vault Hunter, hoping to find both wealth and purpose.

We haven’t seen C4SH in action yet, but we have some idea of how they’ll play. According to Randy Pitchford, this Vault Hunter uses luck and chance – like rolling dice or playing cards – to create unpredictable effects during combat.

Randy Pitchford explains that C4SH’s unpredictable abilities could make him either the strongest character to play in the game, or a major weakness, all based on how lucky players get.

The new character C4SH will be available in the first story expansion for Borderlands 4, titled “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,” which is scheduled to release in early 2026.

In addition to the C4SH content, the “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned” DLC will include new story missions. Players will join Ellie on an adventure inspired by cosmic horror.

Players can look forward to a brand new area to discover, extra side quests to tackle, and powerful new Legendary Gear to find.

In addition, there will be several new cosmetics up for grabs, such as:

  • 4 Vault Hunter Heads
  • 6 Styles
  • 4 Weapon Skins
  • 2 Vehicle Skins
  • 3 ECHO-4 Drone Skins
  • 6 Attachments
  • 1 ECHO-4 Frame

I may finally found my main Vault Hunter in Borderlands 4 and I can’t wait to see more of C4SH

I’ll admit, I haven’t gotten around to playing Borderlands 4 yet. It’s not because of the problems people are complaining about – like the game running poorly or missing content – which have led to a lot of negative reviews on Steam.

Even though Borderlands 4 had some technical problems at launch, critics are overwhelmingly positive about it. My coworker, Michael Hoglund, gave it a 4-star review and called it a fantastic return to what makes the Borderlands series great.

I’m having trouble getting excited about the original Vault Hunters. None of them really capture the same vibe as characters like Zer0, who’s cool and mysterious, Jack, who’s arrogant and villainous, or even Krieg, who is my all-time favorite because of his wild, unpredictable personality.

Okay, so I just saw a quick teaser, and honestly, this new Vault Hunter, C4SH, is already grabbing my attention. I think he might be exactly my kind of character – I’m really excited to learn more!

The character’s design is wonderfully rough and realistic, and the gameplay – which relies on chance using dice and cards – feels similar to the random elements in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel’s Claptrap character, but thankfully without the irritating voice.

Between the recent gameplay improvements – like performance updates and the addition of FOV sliders on consoles – plus the new Vault Hunter and story expansion, I might finally try Borderlands 4 in 2026.

I’m really excited to watch C4SH play and see what their powers can do. It might just be enough to get me back into the Borderlands games after not playing for ten years, since I finished Tales from the Borderlands.
