Problems with how well Borderlands 4 was running led Gearbox to delay its release on the new Nintendo Switch 2 while they worked on improvements. Now, Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, has announced that work on the Switch 2 version has been stopped altogether. Alan Lewis, a spokesperson for Take-Two, confirmed the decision in a statement to Variety, saying they “made the difficult decision to pause development on that version.”
Lewis also noted that Take-Two Interactive is still collaborating with Nintendo to get their games, like the upcoming WWE 2K26, running on the Switch 2.
We’re still dedicated to improving our games after they launch, providing players with great new content and optimizations. We’re working closely with Nintendo, and we’re thrilled to be releasing PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26 (on the Switch 2). We plan to bring even more of our games to that platform in the future.
It’s unclear why development on the game has been put on hold. It’s possible the project has been cancelled altogether, as Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial report doesn’t mention a Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4.
A recent report suggested that Borderlands 4 could be released on the Switch 2 on February 27th. This date came from a listing by a retailer in Portugal. The physical copy of the game would apparently be a Game Key Card, meaning players would need to download the game files before playing.
In September, Gearbox announced that the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 was being delayed. They explained that they wanted to ensure players had the best possible experience, and were focusing on optimization and features like cross-platform saves. In a statement on the official Borderlands Twitter account, Gearbox said the decision wasn’t made easily, but the game required more time for development and refinement.
Fortunately, Nintendo’s eShop policies protected customers who pre-ordered Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2. Instead of losing their money, all digital pre-orders were cancelled, and everyone received automatic refunds. It’s also worth mentioning that some development work went into bringing Borderlands 4 to the Switch 2, and a trailer demonstrating gameplay on the platform was released in July.
Borderlands 4 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and the developers at Gearbox are still adding new content. They’ve announced a roadmap detailing upcoming additions, including ‘Bounty Pack 2: Legend of the Stone Demon’ in February and ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned’ in March. Both are new additions to the cooperative, loot-focused shooter.
The second boss for Invincible will launch with the game’s first major raid in the second quarter of 2026. Gearbox says this boss fight will be a very difficult challenge, requiring players to fight through a new location filled with many enemies and new boss battles.
