Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Was Almost Axed Before It Began

As a die-hard Naruto fan who has witnessed the growth and evolution of Konoha’s ninjas over the years, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about Boruto’s anime journey almost never happening. If it weren’t for Mikio Ikemoto’s dedication to continuing the saga of Naruto’s offspring, we would have been left in suspense with our beloved Hokage instead of exploring the adventures of Boruto Uzumaki.

After Naruto successfully battled against Orochimaru, Madara Uchiha, the Otsutsuki, and the Akatsuki, he ascended to the position of the Seventh Hokage and gained respect among the ninjas in the Hidden Leaf Village. Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, did not want to conclude Naruto’s story with Shippuden and instead focused on the upcoming generation of Konoha’s ninjas, led by Boruto Uzumaki. This resulted in the series “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.” The current anime follows Boruto, who struggled under his father’s shadow, leading to the spin-off series “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.” In a recent interview, Kishimoto revealed that Boruto’s journey almost didn’t come to fruition.

As Boruto: Two Blue Vortex keeps rolling out fresh chapters every month, the future of Boruto’s anime is shrouded in uncertainty. After Boruto joined forces with Kawaki against the antagonist Code, the new leader of the Kara Organization, Studio Pierrot opted to put the anime on hold. Originally, Pierrot announced that the shonen series would resume with a four-episode revisit to the original Naruto storyline, transporting viewers back in time. However, due to Demon Slayer’s success, Pierrot has chosen to modify their approach to animation, focusing instead on releasing content more regularly like seasons, hence requiring more preparation time for Naruto’s anime adaptation.

Boruto Almost Wasn’t

In a recent conversation, Masashi Kishimoto revealed that if Mikio Ikemoto hadn’t agreed to continue the story of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, then the Naruto franchise might have concluded with Naruto as the primary character. Today, Ikemoto continues to be involved in the ongoing manga series, having first worked as Kishimoto’s assistant and later taking over as the main artist for Naruto Next Generations and Two Blue Vortex.

In the absence of a specific return date for Boruto’s anime series, it’s eagerly anticipated that when it resumes, there will be significant events to explore. Post their confrontation with Code, the world in Naruto Next Generations undergoes a dramatic transformation due to Eida’s manipulations and fondness towards Boruto Uzumaki’s family. The upcoming series, Two Blue Vortex, promises an exciting animated sequel as it follows an older Boruto who faces off against both friends and foes.
