The cancellation of Blue Bloods in 2024 shocked many, but the announcement of a new show set in the same world was an even bigger surprise – especially since it won’t be filmed in New York. The series, already picked up for a second season and scheduled to return in February 2026, follows Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Reagan transfers to the Boston Police Department. He hopes this move will help him reconnect with his son, Sean, who is a new officer with the Boston PD.
Because the TV show Blue Bloods was so strongly connected to New York City – the city almost felt like a character itself over its 14 seasons – some viewers are surprised Danny would consider moving. He wants to be near his son, who is eager to establish his own life elsewhere. Donnie Wahlberg explained to People that this storyline feels realistic, as his own son also wants him to spend more time at home.
A lot of people have commented that it doesn’t make sense for Danny to leave New York, and that his son wouldn’t even want him to move to Boston. But I can relate – my own 24-year-old son has asked me several times in the past year to move back to California so we can be closer.
It’s natural to need your parents at any age, even as an adult, and Mark Wahlberg clearly understands that. That’s why his portrayal of this feeling for his character, Danny, feels so genuine. Given that Blue Bloods always centered on family – a key reason for its success – it makes perfect sense that family would be the driving force behind Danny’s move away from New York.
This is incredibly meaningful to me both personally and as I watch it unfold on television. Whenever I worry he might move away, I remember a text from my son, and it reminds me that a son naturally wants to be near his father. There’s just as much reason for Danny to stay in New York as there is for his son.
It’s understandably hard for fans to picture Danny in a new city after 14 seasons in New York, which is where the Reagan family has always been based. That familiarity likely contributes to the difficulty some have accepting his move. Ultimately, though, this storyline is about family. Danny first went to Boston because of Sean’s injury, but he remained to support his son, recognizing Sean’s need for him – a situation Wahlberg, the actor, deeply understands as a father himself.

I’m really excited to see how Boston Blue is connecting to the Blue Bloods universe! They’ve already included some familiar faces – I loved seeing Erin Reagan, played by Bridget Moynahan, and Marisa Ramirez as Maria Baez right in the first episode. And it’s been fun watching Maria pop up in a few others as they continue Danny and Baez’s storyline, even from a distance.
Family has always been central to Blue Bloods, and that continues in Boston Blue, as we saw with Danny’s immediate trip to Boston. While Boston Blue does have some differences – particularly regarding the family dinners – it’s been enjoyable to watch, and it’s anyone’s guess what will happen next.
