Bowen Yang is leaving Saturday Night Live, adding to the list of recent cast departures. He’ll finish out his run during the Christmas break, with Ariana Grande, his co-star from Wicked, hosting his final episode and Cher performing as a special guest.
Yang is the newest cast member to leave the show, but his departure wasn’t unexpected. He previously discussed the possibility of leaving with creator Lorne Michaels, as he shared in an interview with People magazine.
I’ve always operated on a simple feeling: is there still work for me to do? And honestly, I feel like there is. I even talked it over with Lorne, and he reassured me, saying I still had a lot to offer. It meant so much, because I’d actually confessed to him that I was worried people might be getting tired of seeing me. He completely dismissed that, telling me he needed me and that there was still more for me to do.
After starting at SNL as a writer in 2018 and becoming a cast member for season 45, Yang is leaving the show. He was later promoted to a repertory player before season 47, but despite telling Michaels he had more he wanted to do, his departure is now official.
Bowen Yang has quickly become a popular cast member on Saturday Night Live, even earning an Emmy nomination for his supporting role – a first for anyone starting as a featured player. He’s also appeared in recent films like Wicked and Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu, as well as Bros and Fire Island.
