The 2025 film has quickly become Apple TV’s most popular movie, reaching the top of the chart shortly after its June release. It received positive reviews and has already earned $631.5 million worldwide. Given the success of other films on the platform, it’s likely to remain a top pick for a while.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also made Top Gun: Maverick, F1 stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula One driver who returns to racing after 30 years to save his teammate’s struggling team. The cast also includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem, and features cameos from real-life racing drivers like producer Lewis Hamilton.
Despite becoming one of the top-grossing films of 2025, F1 was a very expensive production, costing around $300 million to make. Considering theaters likely take half the revenue, it won’t be the year’s most profitable film. However, its popularity on Apple TV proves audiences are excited to see Brad Pitt perform his own stunts, similar to Tom Cruise, and do everything seen on screen for real.
The film’s budget was affected by the SAG-AFTRA strikes because it included actual race footage. Filming had to be paused and then resumed during the 2024 racing season to capture races that couldn’t be filmed initially. Brad Pitt also fully immersed himself in the racing world, attending driver meetings, singing the national anthem, and driving modified cars, which allowed him to appear in all the driving scenes without relying on CGI or stunt doubles.
‘F1’ Is Getting a Sequel

Warner Bros.
I’m really hoping we get a sequel to F1! It was Apple’s biggest movie yet, and Brad Pitt’s most successful film ever, so it just makes sense. It sounds like the director, Joseph Kosinski, feels the same way. He recently told Variety that he’s thinking about continuing the story with Sonny Hayes.
We’re currently brainstorming ideas for what comes next for both the character Sonny Hayes and the Apex GP series. The overwhelmingly positive response to the film suggests there’s definitely interest in continuing the story, and I’d love to be involved – we all had a great time making this movie.
Director Joseph Kosinski is known for successful sequels, having recently made Top Gun: Maverick a huge hit in 2023. He’s now working on another sequel, and the competition to release it first is on. Getting the films made quickly will depend on whether the lead actors are available when needed.
