For years, Overwatch was the standard for team-based hero shooters. While Overwatch 2, released in 2022, gained some players, it also faced criticism compared to the original game. Recently, the game underwent major changes and was renamed back to Overwatch. Now, shortly after that announcement, Blizzard has revealed a brand new project set in the Overwatch world.
Blizzard announced a new Overwatch game for mobile devices on February 24th, called Overwatch Rush. The company described it as a completely new game designed specifically for mobile players. They released a nearly four-minute video showing early gameplay footage, giving fans a first look at the game’s visuals and how it will play. While the game is still in development and subject to changes, the video provides a good preview of what to expect.
Blizzard Reveals Brand-New Mobile Hero Shooter Overwatch Rush

Just weeks after a big update launched a new season for Overwatch, Blizzard is announcing Overwatch Rush, a mobile version of the popular hero shooter. While fans often have mixed reactions to mobile games based on established franchises, the popularity of mobile gaming means these spinoffs are often successful. Now, Overwatch is joining the mobile market.
Blizzard announced that Overwatch Rush isn’t just a mobile version of the original Overwatch game. It’s being created by a different team with a lot of experience making mobile games. The team currently working on Overwatch will continue to focus on that game while Rush is developed. Blizzard even showed off some early gameplay footage, as the game is already making good progress. You can watch the Overwatch Rush gameplay trailer below.
As shown, Overwatch Rush is a hero shooter with a top-down perspective. Although this is a very early version of the game, it gives you a good idea of the team-based gameplay and how it will look. Blizzard hasn’t announced when the mobile Overwatch game will be released, but they’ve created an official Discord server where you can find updates. A recent FAQ post on that Discord provides some initial details about what to expect from the game.
The game’s method of making money is now a bit clearer. It will be free to play, but with optional purchases within the game – similar to how Overwatch works. The developers want skill to be the most important factor in winning, and they’re open to changing how purchases work based on player feedback during testing. It’s still unknown whether players will need to ‘collect’ heroes through a random system (like a ‘gacha’ mechanic), or if purchases will only be for cosmetic items. While many mobile games use this ‘collectible’ system, this game might follow Overwatch’s existing model.
Overwatch Rush is coming to iOS and Android devices in several regions. Players in some of those areas will soon have the opportunity to test the game. If you’re interested in trying out and providing feedback on the mobile Overwatch game, watch for a playtest announcement in your region.
As a huge Overwatch fan, I’m so hyped about the possibility of a new mobile game! I’d love to hear what you all think – let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
