Discussions about potential Breaking Bad spinoffs usually focus on Better Call Saul, the existing prequel, or a prequel centered around Gus Fring. However, there are actually three other spinoff series most fans aren’t aware of. These are short-form series that expand on the original story, rather than telling completely new ones. While Better Call Saul is as well-written as Breaking Bad, these other spinoffs don’t reach the same level of quality.
It’s probably unfair to compare these shows to critically acclaimed dramas like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. However, the fact that these spin-offs aren’t attracting a large audience points to a difficult reality for the franchise – something its creators need to think about if they plan to make more shows in the future.
The Three Breaking Bad Spinoffs You Probably Haven’t Seen

As a big fan of the Breaking Bad universe, I think a lot of us have seen Better Call Saul and El Camino, but there are actually three short-form spinoff series that not many people know about. Honestly, they didn’t get much publicity, and they were released online as web series – so you really had to know where to look for them. They tried to expand the story, but without directly connecting to the main shows, which meant they didn’t really have any major plot developments.
- Breaking Bad: Original Minisodes
- Better Call Saul Employee Training
- Slippin’ Jimmy
The Breaking Bad: Original Minisodes offered short looks into the lives of the show’s characters. These might have been better received if they’d been shown alongside the regular episodes. However, because they were released primarily online, and in between seasons, they didn’t gain much of an audience. They also had a lighter, more comedic style that didn’t quite match the tone of the main series, even though they did reveal new details about the characters.
The web series Better Call Saul Employee Training stood out as the strongest of the Breaking Bad spin-offs, even earning an Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. AMC gave it a little more promotion than other similar projects, making it somewhat well-known. However, like the Original Minisodes, it mostly relied on humor and didn’t take itself too seriously.
Then came Slippin’ Jimmy, a Breaking Bad spin-off that most viewers either overlooked or criticized. Unfortunately, that reaction was pretty justified. The animated series showed Jimmy’s life when he was younger, and it had the potential to explore his difficult childhood and relationship with Chuck in a compelling way. However, Slippin’ Jimmy didn’t live up to that potential in its six episodes. The animation and humor weren’t very strong, which explains why it’s largely forgotten today.
These Overlooked Additions Hint at a Harsh Truth for the Breaking Bad Universe

While they might not seem like major additions, the lesser-known Breaking Bad spinoffs reveal a key point about AMC’s approach to its popular franchise. Better Call Saul demonstrated that creating another hit series was possible, but these other attempts show that success isn’t guaranteed, even with a well-loved show like Breaking Bad. Simply expanding the universe isn’t enough to ensure a good result. If AMC decides to create more spinoffs in the future, they’ll need to carefully consider what kind of stories they tell, as comedy and short-form content don’t seem to be a good fit for the Breaking Bad world.
