It’s been over 25 years since Brendan Fraser first became known as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy, a hugely popular adventure film from the 90s. For years, the movie series seemed forgotten by Universal Studios, gathering dust like an old artifact. But that’s now changing! After a long wait and lots of rumors, The Mummy 4 is officially happening. We’re returning to the desert, the ancient ruins, and the world Brendan Fraser helped create—and he’s now sharing why he’s waited two decades to make a sequel.
I was so fascinated by a recent interview with Brendan Fraser where he talked to the Associated Press. He really got into how the Mummy movies ended up going in a different direction than he initially imagined after The Mummy Returns. It’s amazing to hear him say that the next film is the one he’s been wanting to make for twenty years – it sounds like a real passion project, and I can’t wait to see it!
I always envisioned a particular project, but it never came to fruition. The third film I worked on was a unique situation – it was tricky explaining it to the Associated Press. NBC had the broadcast rights for the Olympics that year, so they combined two projects, and we ended up going to China. Working in Shanghai was an amazing experience. I’m really proud of that third film because I think it works well as a complete story. We quickly regrouped, assembled a new team, and did our best work.
Honestly, hearing this is tough as a fan. It sounds like The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor really went in a direction Brendan Fraser didn’t love. He’s said he has respect for everyone involved, but it seems like the movie was more about meeting deadlines and TV rights than about what he thought was best for his character, Rick O’Connell. It’s a shame when creative vision gets sidelined like that.
Despite experiencing both great success and difficult times throughout his career, and even after a celebrated comeback known as the ‘Brenaissance’ culminating in an Oscar win, Fraser remained focused on a specific story he’d always wanted to tell, and he now feels he can finally bring it to life.
The project I’ve been dreaming of is finally happening. I’ve waited twenty years for this opportunity – sometimes it felt like a clear sign, other times a subtle hint. But now, the moment is here to deliver what the fans have been asking for.
Brendan Fraser’s dream of making another Mummy movie is finally happening, and fans who loved his adventurous Rick O’Connell are thrilled. After a period where he showed vulnerability, Fraser is experiencing a career comeback – a ‘Brenaissance 2.0’ – and returning to the role that made him famous feels like a perfect fit. He’s always cherished playing O’Connell, and this new opportunity is a natural progression for the actor.

This fourth film could be both a loving tribute to the original story Fraser always envisioned and a fresh, exciting adventure. Fraser’s enthusiasm even before filming starts suggests the movie will be truly special. After two decades, everything has finally come together.
While many fans are hoping for The Mummy 4 to come out in 2026, it’s unlikely. The movie is still very early in production, with casting just beginning, and 2026 is already full of planned releases for Universal and other studios. A release in 2027 is much more probable. The next adventure with the O’Connell family is on its way, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see it.
Brendan Fraser will star in the upcoming film Rental Family, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 21, 2025, just before Thanksgiving.
