Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy 4 Release Date Confirmed, Ending a Two-Decade Wait

The 1999 film The Mummy was a huge success, launching a popular franchise for Universal Pictures and making Brendan Fraser a well-known actor. Inspired by adventure films like Indiana Jones, the series quickly gained a devoted fanbase thanks to its exciting action and lighthearted tone. While The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor seemed to end the main story in 2008, the franchise is now getting a new installment – a legacy sequel. After rumors surfaced months ago about The Mummy 4 bringing Fraser and Rachel Weisz back together, the release date has now been officially confirmed.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a fourth Mummy movie is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028—almost 20 years after the third film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, came out. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially signed on to star, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known as Radio Silence) are directing.

The Mummy 4 Could Be One of the Biggest Hits of 2028

Universal made a good decision by claiming a mid-May release date for The Mummy 4 before the slot was taken. Currently, 2028 doesn’t have many major releases scheduled; The Mummy 4 is planned to open a couple of weeks after an unnamed Marvel movie and a week before an unnamed Disney film. If these dates remain unchanged, The Mummy 4 should have a strong chance of success. The two-week gap should provide enough distance from the Marvel movie to avoid significant competition. Disney might even decide to move its film away from the Memorial Day weekend to avoid competing directly with The Mummy. Disney often targets that holiday for releases, but facing a revived, popular franchise might not be the best strategy for them.

Universal is clearly confident in The Mummy 4, releasing it during the peak summer movie season, and for good reason. The original Mummy trilogy remains a classic adventure series, and Brendan Fraser has become popular again recently, highlighted by his Oscar win for The Whale and other successful roles. It’s exciting to see him leading a big-budget blockbuster, marking a high point in his career comeback. Fraser was fantastic as a classic action hero in the original Mummy films, and it will be a lot of fun to see him reprise that iconic role.

A fourth Mummy movie could be a big hit because there aren’t many classic adventure films being made right now. With the Indiana Jones series on hold and Uncharted 2 taking a while to develop, audiences are missing that type of exciting blockbuster. The Mummy 4 should appeal to a lot of people, especially as the marketing gets underway and fans remember how much they enjoyed the original movies. While there are plenty of large-scale films in theaters, nothing quite captures the same spirit as The Mummy.

For The Mummy 4 to be a major summer hit, it needs to be a good movie that people will talk about positively. The project appears to be on the right track, with the directing team Radio Silence seeming like a perfect fit for bringing The Mummy back to life. They’ve gained recognition for directing popular films like Ready or Not, Scream 2022, and Scream VI, proving they can revitalize existing franchises with a fresh approach. They seem uniquely capable of breathing new life into The Mummy, and it will be interesting to see how they handle the large-scale action and adventure the film offers. If The Mummy 4 does well, it will likely lead to more sequels.
