Brian Austin Green Details “Tumultuous Separation” From Vanessa Marcil

Brian Austin Green is looking back at a previous chapter in his life. 

Following a public disagreement with his former fiancée, Vanessa Marcil, sparked by his description of their relationship as “toxic,” the Beverly Hills, 90210 star recently shared what he took away from their split in 2003.

Brian, who shares 23-year-old son Kassius with the General Hospital actress, explained on the November 25th episode of the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast that their breakup was very difficult. He said both of them wanted to feel like they were ‘winning’ and being acknowledged as the smarter one, which led to unrealistic expectations and a lot of conflict. Ultimately, this made the separation extremely challenging.

When he began dating Megan Fox in 2004, Brian knew he and his ex had to try to mend their dynamic.

When my partner and I decided to separate, we both knew it would impact our children. We agreed that while we couldn’t prevent that impact, we were responsible for how it affected them. It’s honestly heartbreaking knowing this is hard on our kids, but separation is rarely easy for anyone involved.

Brian, 52, explained that his relationship with Vanessa, 57 – they were together from 1999 to 2003 – could go either way. It could be a good experience for everyone involved, or it could turn into a situation where they both end up speaking negatively about each other as parents.

He shares sons Noah, 12, Bodhi, 11, and Journey, 9, with his ex-wife Megan, and a 3-year-old son, Zane, with his fiancée, Sharna Burgess. Despite a strained relationship with Vanessa, Brian has developed a good connection with Megan—who shares a 7-month-old daughter, Saga, with her and her ex-fiancé, Machine Gun Kelly. They’ve managed to find common ground.

Brian said things are going well with Megan. They’ve developed a good co-parenting relationship, and Megan gets along great with his fiancée, Sharna. He explained they both respect each other’s space, and he understands that there were reasons for their separation.

But that doesn’t mean it was easy to transform their romantic relationship into a platonic one.

Look, I’ve been following this situation closely, and he’s right – they’re not magically going to become best friends just because they’re co-parenting. They grew apart for a reason, and it’s good he’s acknowledging that. Honestly, it’s a relief to hear him say his priority is simply the well-being of their children, and that’s what he’s focused on. It’s realistic and, frankly, what everyone wants to hear.

Brian was very direct about his relationship with Vanessa. He actually confessed that his close relationship with his mother was the reason he started dating the actress known as The Rock.

He explained on his podcast, Oldish, that he typically looks for partners who are very different from his ex. However, he admitted this approach led to some mistakes, specifically in his relationship with Vanessa, which he described as unhealthy and lacking in care and affection.

He explained that his mother was overly affectionate and focused all her attention on him. In contrast, his relationship with Vanessa didn’t have that same level of closeness initially, though it sometimes seemed like it did.

Vanessa didn’t address her ex’s statements directly, but she did post screenshots of text messages with Brian that appeared to show them having a friendly time at Kass’ college graduation.

Brian celebrated Mother’s Day 2024 by sharing a heartfelt message for Sharna on Instagram. He called her an amazing mother and fiancée, and expressed how much everyone loves her.

Megan intentionally keeps her children off social media for a key reason: protecting their privacy. She explained to Glamour UK in 2022 that she wanted to limit their online exposure from a young age. While she feels they’ve successfully maintained a sense of innocence so far, she acknowledges she can’t shield them from the internet forever.

Brian says the key to successful co-parenting is choosing when to argue. He explained to TopMob News in 2024 that separation will impact children, but parents can control how it impacts them. Trying to shield kids completely isn’t realistic, so focusing on a positive impact is what matters.

Megan is careful not to say negative things about her children’s father when she’s with them. As she explained on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2023, she believes that speaking badly about him would be like rejecting a part of her own children, since he’s an important part of who they are.

Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) has said his daughter played a key role in his journey to sobriety. He shared on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast that she noticed when he was using drugs, and that moment was a turning point for him. MGK, who has been sober since August 2023, explained he wants to be a better father than his own, and getting clean is about ending a pattern for his daughter.

Sharna expressed gratitude to Brian’s children for giving her a preview of motherhood. Appearing on the Quite Frankly podcast in 2023, she explained, “I was able to practice being a mom with them.” She added that she learned a lot about parenting and understanding children, which gave her confidence in her future abilities as a mother.

Brian had a vasectomy about two months after their son, Zane, was born, but he could potentially reverse the procedure later. Sharna mentioned on the Oldish podcast in January that they would consider it if they had the room in their lives and the means to do so. However, with four young children, their lives are already incredibly full.

I was so thrilled to hear that Megan and Machine Gun Kelly had a baby girl on March 27, 2025! It’s amazing, and honestly, it gets even cooler – MGK and some incredibly talented friends, including Travis Barker, actually wrote an original song to celebrate her arrival. It’s such a unique and special touch, and I’m completely obsessed with the idea!
