Bridgerton boss responds to show being criticised as “woke”: “That’s so cute”

As a fervent enthusiast, I must say that Shonda Rhimes, the innovative mind behind blockbuster shows like Bridgerton (alongside Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, just to name a few), has gracefully addressed criticisms labeling her Netflix hit, Bridgerton, as “woke”. Instead of dismissing the critiques, she takes this as an opportunity to educate and engage in meaningful dialogue about the show’s purposeful representation.

Right from the beginning, Bridgerton has been committed to diverse casting. Shonda Rhimes emphasized this during a panel at the Edinburgh TV Festival, stating, “I will never create a show that doesn’t reflect me… I find it less engaging when I don’t see myself represented.

When Mishal Husain inquired if she was aware that the show was called “woke,” Rhimes replied, “I hadn’t realized anyone referred to it as ‘woke’.

Husain stated, “The Telegraph clearly accused them of catering to woke-oriented casting,” to which Rhimes replied, “How adorable.

Rhimes, receiving the first Edinburgh Fellowship, further stated that she steers clear of reading criticisms about her series, expressing: “I figured out quite some time ago not to read comments on myself or my programs.

In other words, if you choose to accept compliments, you must also be prepared to confront criticisms.” This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and easily-readable language.

I’ve made up my mind that everything is inconsequential in this regard. It’s crucial for me to avoid getting involved. I have no say in how others perceive or respond to it, as it’s not my concern.

The fourth season of Bridgerton, scheduled to air in 2026, is now in the editing phase following production. Shonda Rhimes has verified this information, indicating that the final episode is undergoing edits at present.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the upcoming focus on the heartwarming romance between Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie Baek, portrayed by Yerin Ha. Shonda Rhimes has kept us on our toes by withholding any juicy plot details at the panel, leaving us eagerly anticipating every twist and turn in their love story!

She hasn’t dismissed the concept of additional prequels and spin-offs beyond Queen Charlotte, hinting that: “There might be room for series like prequels.

Julia Quinn has penned additional books that are somewhat spin-offs from Bridgerton, but the Bridgerton series primarily focuses on eight siblings. It’s about Violet Bridgerton ensuring each of her eight children finds a spouse, with each season representing a new child getting married.

Currently, you can stream seasons 1-3 of Bridgerton right here on Netflix. If you’re interested in reading the series, the Bridgerton books are available for purchase at Amazon.
