Let me tell you, things are a little rocky upstairs in season four of Bridgerton. Golda Rosheuvel, who plays the fabulous Lady Danbury, says there’s some tension at the very top. And honestly, you can feel it – she’s been embodying royalty for six years now, and she just naturally commands that regal air, even when describing a disagreement! She even slips into the royal ‘we’ sometimes, which is just perfect.
Initially, she believes Whistledown (Nicola Coughlan) is a useful asset she can manage and befriend to control the gossip. However, she’s surprised when Danbury requests to be removed from the social scene.
Adjoa Andoh explains that Danbury is at a point in her life where she’s really exploring her identity. Having been sent from Sierra Leone to the UK for an arranged marriage to a much older man – a marriage shown in ‘Queen Charlotte‘ to be unhappy and resulting in four children – she’s now relieved by his death and embracing her newfound independence.
The third season sees the return of her brother, Marcus, bringing her family history back into focus. She eventually realizes there’s a missing piece of her past, specifically understanding her life in Sierra Leone. Based on what friends who were fostered or adopted have shared, discovering this missing information becomes increasingly important at certain points in life.

When Danbury decides to go on a journey of self-discovery, it causes a major rift among the leading figures. According to Rosheuvel, the Queen feels isolated and desperately needs her closest confidante nearby, fearing the impact on their relationship. As expected, the Queen reacts badly to the news.
According to Andoh, the Queen declared she expected to be obeyed. Danbury responded by saying that if she had to follow orders, she wouldn’t want to be friends. This sparked a childish argument, and the way they resolve this conflict will be a central storyline throughout the season.
The story explores how close friendships develop and change over the years, something the actresses can relate to. Golda Rosheuvel shares a personal example: a friend helped her navigate a dating situation years ago, advising her not to rush into anything serious. Rosheuvel, who had been single for five years at the time, took the advice and ended up happily marrying the person she was dating over a decade later.
Whenever I’m in Los Angeles, I always go to see my brother, and being with him instantly makes me feel centered and calm. He’s been a musician in bands for years – I was into punk rock and actually got him interested in it too. Really, that’s all I ever dreamed of doing: playing bass in a punk band. It’s a surprisingly down-to-earth desire, especially considering my public persona.

The first part of Bridgerton season 4 arrives on Netflix January 29th, followed by the second part on February 26th. All previous seasons (1-3) are currently available to stream on Netflix. If you’d like to read the books that inspired the show, you can purchase the Bridgerton series on Amazon.
