Bridgerton has consistently been a groundbreaking show, and this season, it’s Lady Violet, played by Ruth Gemmell, who’s leading the charge in surprising new directions.
According to Gemmell, the character continues to focus on arranging marriages for her children this year. She’s initially frustrated with Benedict’s lack of cooperation, but she also develops a closer relationship with Marcus Anderson (played by Daniel Francis).
Gemmell playfully refers to a developing, passionate romance between the characters as “spending a lot more time” together.
To be honest, I was a little hesitant when I first read the scripts. I’m nearing sixty, and I wasn’t thrilled about having a storyline similar to the younger characters. However, it ended up being a lot of fun. Daniel is a wonderful person to work with, and it was a nice opportunity to try something new.
Violet’s connection with Marcus is unique. He wasn’t part of the original Julia Quinn novels—he was created specifically for the series. Quinn has explained that she struggled to envision a suitable partner for Violet and hadn’t planned for her to remarry.

I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of Violet getting a new love interest,” Gemmell explains. “We’ve already made significant changes from the original books, and I didn’t want to disrespect the source material or the fans. However, adapting a book to the screen always requires changes, so you have to be flexible and go with the flow.
Violet handles the situation with good humor. While her relationship with Marcus isn’t intensely passionate, there’s definitely a strong attraction between them. It’s rare to see older characters portrayed with such a close and sexual connection on television.
I really connected with what Gemmell said. It’s so true that we often focus on young love in stories, but there’s a real richness to be found in exploring relationships with people who’ve lived a little – who’ve known heartbreak, loss, and all the complexities of life. And honestly, it feels good to see that reflected on screen, especially since the show seems to be geared towards viewers my age. It’s refreshing to see a show that understands and represents that experience – a reminder that life, and love, don’t end when you get older!
This storyline required Gemmell to work with an intimacy coordinator for the first time in four seasons of the show.
I first became aware there would be intimate scenes during a costume fitting, and it was quite unsettling. Thankfully, everyone was very considerate of my boundaries and what I was comfortable with. We had open communication with the intimacy coordinator, and the scenes were filmed with a small, trusted crew on a closed set, which made me feel safe. It was also much more modest than some of the scenes involving younger actors, which was a huge relief for everyone involved.
