Bridgerton’s Season 5 Release in 2027 Is Its Quickest Return Yet

You will burn for the latest Bridgerton news.

Netflix revealed at its May 13 presentation that the fifth season of the show will be available in 2027, according to several news sources. This season is notable because it will arrive less than two years after the previous one—the shortest gap between seasons since the show first premiered in 2020. Season four was released in January.

Season five features a central love story between Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza). This romance develops two years after the passing of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling (Victor Alli).

Filming for the new season, based on Julia Quinn‘s novel When He Was Wicked, is already happening. Showrunner Jess Brownell is giving fans a sneak peek at the upcoming romance between Francesca and Michaela.

According to showrunner Brownell, the fifth season will heavily focus on longing and desire. He described it as a potentially landmark season, while also acknowledging that many other shows have successfully portrayed LGBTQ+ relationships before.

The show has also delved into Benedict Bridgerton (played by Luke Thompson) discovering his sexuality. However, the creator, Brownell, noted that dedicating an entire season of Bridgerton to a lesbian romance would be a significant undertaking.

Honestly, I’m dying to see how they develop Francesca’s feelings for Michaela – especially knowing Michaela is the Michael Sterling from the book! But more than anything, I just want everyone to feel what Francesca and Michaela feel together. It’s about that connection, you know? I really hope viewers get that.

Brownell shared that from the start, the goal of the show has been to help viewers see themselves reflected on screen, and to inspire them to imagine possibilities for their own lives. She felt it was important to include LGBTQ+ relationships as part of that vision.

Dodd and Baduza are also excited to help to lead a new story for the Bridgerton universe.

Historically, stories about LGBTQ+ relationships haven’t been included in shows like historical dramas, despite the fact that queer people have always been a part of history and continue to be today, as Dodd explained to Tudum.

As a huge fan, what really resonated with me about what Baduza said is their desire to show queer love authentically, and – crucially – to let those stories have happy endings. It’s so important to see that representation done right, and to know these characters deserve all the good things!
