Accurate and efficient multiscale simulation remains a significant challenge in many engineering disciplines. This paper introduces a novel approach, ‘Hybrid coupling with operator inference and the overlapping Schwarz alternating method’, to address this by seamlessly integrating high-fidelity full order models with reduced order models using a flexible domain decomposition technique. The proposed methodology leverages operator inference and the overlapping Schwarz alternating method to achieve substantial speedups-up to 106x in solid dynamics problems-while maintaining high accuracy. These simulations aren’t merely about predicting whether a structure will withstand a load; they are integral to the entire design process, enabling engineers to explore numerous iterations, identify potential failure points, and refine designs before physical prototypes are built – drastically reducing both cost and development time. Consider the aerospace industry, where complex components must perform reliably under extreme conditions; detailed solid mechanics simulations are essential for ensuring structural integrity and passenger safety. Similarly, in the automotive sector, crash simulations – reliant on precise material modeling – are critical for meeting stringent safety regulations. Beyond these, advancements in areas like additive manufacturing and soft robotics are increasingly dependent on the fidelity of these simulations to predict the behavior of newly designed materials and geometries.
The behavior of any solid object, from a simple rubber band to a complex aircraft wing, is ultimately governed by the principles embedded within the Euler-Lagrange equations. These equations, derived from the foundations of variational calculus, provide a powerful means of describing how a solid deforms under applied forces. Solving the Solid Mechanics Problem, therefore, isn’t simply a matter of applying static formulas; it requires a comprehensive mathematical framework capable of handling the dynamic interplay between forces, displacements, and internal stresses. This framework isn’t limited to static analysis either; it extends to transient dynamics, where $ \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{q}} – \frac{d}{dt} \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot{q}} = 0 $ – the core of the Euler-Lagrange equation – dictates the evolution of the system over time. Without this robust mathematical foundation, accurately predicting material response and ensuring structural integrity becomes exceptionally challenging, necessitating sophisticated numerical methods and constitutive modeling to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.
Predicting how a solid material will respond to force requires a constitutive model – a mathematical description of the material’s intrinsic behavior. These models aren’t derived from first principles but are instead empirically determined and phenomenologically expressed, capturing observed relationships between deformation and stress. A prominent example is the hyperelastic material model, frequently used for rubber-like materials undergoing large deformations. Unlike linear elasticity which assumes small strains, hyperelasticity accounts for nonlinearities, employing energy functions – such as the Mooney-Rivlin or Ogden model – to relate stress to strain. The computational expense associated with solving finite element equations stems from several factors. Realistic geometries necessitate a large number of elements to accurately represent the domain, directly increasing the size of the resulting system of algebraic equations. Furthermore, the inclusion of complex material properties – such as anisotropy, plasticity, or temperature-dependent behavior – increases the complexity of each element’s contribution to the system matrix. Solving the resulting system of equations – often involving millions or billions of degrees of freedom – demands substantial memory and processing power, frequently requiring high-performance computing resources and efficient solution algorithms. The computational cost scales non-linearly with mesh refinement and material model complexity, presenting a significant challenge for simulating large-scale or highly detailed solid mechanics problems.
Computational cost is a primary concern in finite element analysis (FEA) due to the large number of degrees of freedom often required to accurately represent complex geometries and material behaviors. Reducing this cost, without compromising solution accuracy, is therefore crucial for practical applications. Operator Inference: Reducing Complexity Through Dimensionality Reduction
Reduced Order Modeling (ROM) centers on creating a simplified representation of a complex system, typically described by a Full Order Model (FOM). The FOM often involves a large number of degrees of freedom, leading to computationally expensive simulations. ROM techniques aim to approximate the behavior of the FOM using a significantly smaller number of degrees of freedom, thereby reducing computational cost while retaining essential system characteristics. This is achieved by identifying the dominant modes of the system and constructing a reduced model that accurately captures the behavior associated with these modes, effectively discarding less significant details present in the original, high-fidelity FOM. The reduction in degrees of freedom directly translates to a decrease in the size of the matrices and vectors involved in the simulation, leading to substantial performance gains.
Operator Inference constructs reduced-order models without requiring modifications to the original, full-order model’s governing equations. This is achieved through the application of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) to a set of solution snapshots obtained from simulations of the full-order model. POD identifies the dominant modes – the spatial patterns that capture most of the system’s dynamics – by projecting the solution data onto an optimal basis. These dominant modes then form the reduced basis used to represent the system with significantly fewer degrees of freedom, enabling efficient computation of approximate solutions without altering the underlying physics defined in the original model.
The Khatri-Rao product, denoted by $A \otimes_n B$, is a matrix operation fundamental to constructing the reduced basis in operator inference. Specifically, it involves the element-wise multiplication of the column $n$ of matrix $A$ with all columns of matrix $B$, resulting in a matrix with dimensions equal to the product of the number of rows of $A$ and $B$. In the context of reduced order modeling, this product is utilized to efficiently map the full-order model’s input and output spaces onto the reduced basis, effectively creating a lower-dimensional representation while preserving key dynamic characteristics. The computational efficiency of the Khatri-Rao product is critical for scaling operator inference to high-dimensional systems and enabling fast construction of the reduced model.
Reduced order models created via operator inference enable significantly faster simulations compared to full, high-fidelity models. Performance gains of up to $10^6$x have been demonstrated while maintaining acceptable levels of accuracy. This computational efficiency is particularly beneficial for applications requiring numerous simulations, such as parametric studies where model behavior is assessed across a range of input parameters. Real-time applications, including control systems and rapid design iteration, also benefit from the reduced computational burden, allowing for quicker responses and more efficient workflows.

Parallel Computing: Accelerating Solutions with Domain Decomposition

Rather than tackling an entire problem at once, this method intelligently divides the computational domain into numerous smaller, independent subdomains. Each subdomain can then be assigned to a separate processor, allowing for concurrent calculations and a substantial reduction in overall simulation time. This approach mirrors how complex tasks are often broken down in real-world scenarios – distributing workload for increased efficiency. This technique operates by repeatedly solving the problem within each subdomain, using data from neighboring subdomains as boundary conditions, and then exchanging information until a converged solution is achieved. Crucially, implementing this method with overlapping domain decomposition – where subdomains extend slightly beyond their natural boundaries – significantly enhances stability and convergence rates. This overlap allows for smoother data exchange and reduces the sensitivity to interface conditions, effectively mitigating errors that can arise from imperfect coupling. The result is a robust and scalable approach to parallel computation, well-suited for tackling complex, large-scale simulations across various scientific and engineering disciplines.
The integration of $Newmark-\beta$ time integration within domain decomposition strategies provides a robust approach to solving time-dependent problems efficiently. This method, a widely used implicit time-stepping scheme, excels at maintaining numerical stability even with relatively large time steps, crucial for accelerating simulations. By combining $Newmark-\beta$ with techniques like the Schwarz alternating method and overlapping domain decomposition, complex systems can be modeled dynamically without prohibitive computational costs. The implicit nature of $Newmark-\beta$ necessitates solving a system of equations at each time step, but this is readily accommodated within the parallel framework of domain decomposition, distributing the computational burden across multiple processors and further enhancing performance. This synergistic combination allows researchers to simulate transient phenomena and explore dynamic behavior in scenarios previously limited by computational constraints.
The synergistic application of domain decomposition, coupled with the Schwarz alternating method and Newmark-β time integration, delivers substantial reductions in computational time and expands the scope of solvable engineering problems. Recent implementations, specifically utilizing COpInf-COpInf coupling, have demonstrated significant performance gains; simulations involving bolted joints experienced speedups of 9.84x, while predictive analyses of these joints achieved a 6.12x improvement. These results highlight the potential of this combined approach to tackle increasingly complex systems previously limited by computational resources, offering engineers the ability to analyze larger models and explore more design iterations with greater efficiency.

The pursuit of efficient simulation, as detailed in this work regarding hybrid coupling and the Schwarz alternating method, echoes a fundamental principle of systemic design. Every optimization, every attempt to accelerate a process, inevitably introduces new complexities and potential tension points within the larger system.
