Britney Spears has had enough.
Britney Spears publicly criticized her former husband, Kevin Federline, just before his memoir, *You Thought You Knew*, came out. The book shares details about the difficult relationship Britney has with their two sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19.
She shared on X (formerly Twitter) on October 15th that her ex-husband’s manipulative behavior is deeply painful and draining. She explained that she’s always wanted to be actively involved in her sons’ lives, and that building relationships with teenage boys can be challenging.
I’ve been really hurt by this whole situation, and I’ve consistently tried to involve them in my life, even pleading with them. Unfortunately, they’ve always seen how my own father has treated me with disrespect. Now, they need to focus on their own well-being and take ownership of their choices.
Britney says she’s only spent 45 minutes with one of her sons and has only seen the other four times in the last five years.
The Grammy-winning artist expressed that she also feels proud, and will always love her children. Moving forward, she plans to clearly communicate her availability to them.
Honestly, reading what Kevin had to say in his book just felt like a punch to the gut. It was full of little… distortions, things that just weren’t true, and it’s *me* who ends up feeling all the pain from it. I’m the only one really getting hurt by him twisting things around.
She explained that she’s a private person who values her peace, and after five years of prioritizing that, she felt compelled to speak out. She believes any woman in her situation would feel the same way.
Britney’s spokesperson criticized Kevin’s new book, claiming he’s making money by sharing details about his past relationship with her. The pair were married from 2004 to 2007.
A spokesperson for her stated on October 14th that this situation is particularly difficult as it follows the end of child support payments from Kevin. Her primary concern is the well-being of her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and protecting them from unwanted media attention.
Kevin explained that he wrote his memoir hoping it would help his sons build a strong and loving relationship with their mother.
It just breaks my heart thinking about it, honestly. He told the *New York Times* that his kids… they don’t even *know* the woman he married. Can you imagine? Twenty years! He’s been working for twenty years to try and make them understand, to connect with the person he was back then. It’s just… devastating to think about all that lost time and effort.
As someone who keeps up with impactful stories, I’ve been following both Kevin’s and Britney’s journeys. Kevin’s memoir, *You Thought You Knew*, is coming out on October 21st, but if you’re looking for a powerful read right now, I highly recommend Britney Spears’ *The Woman in Me*, published in 2023. It’s her story, told her way, and it’s incredibly compelling.
Kevin explained that he wrote his memoir hoping it would help his sons build a strong and loving relationship with their mother.
He explained to the New York Times on October 14th that it’s difficult for his children to understand who he was before their mother changed, because they never knew the woman he originally married. He’s been trying to help them understand for twenty years.
Kevin’s new memoir, *You Thought You Knew*, will be released on October 21st. In the meantime, you can read Britney’s story in her 2023 memoir, *The Woman in Me*—it’s available below.
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake first met as children while performing on Disney Channel’s *The Mickey Mouse Club* in the early 1990s. They were joined by other young stars like Christina Aguilera, as well as slightly older performers including Keri Russell, Ryan Gosling, and Tony Lucca.
Oh my gosh, can you even *imagine*? It wasn’t instant, it took a little while, but Britney says she and Justin first fell for each other when she was touring with *NSYNC. And get this – their *first* kiss? It happened during a sleepover with the cast, playing Truth or Dare! The irony is just… everything, because a Janet Jackson song was playing in the background! Seriously, it’s like something out of a movie, I’m obsessed with this story!
Britney shares that she had an abortion after becoming pregnant while dating Justin Timberlake, because he felt they were too young to have a child. She describes the experience as incredibly painful, recalling having the procedure at home while Justin lay nearby playing guitar.
She’s still questioning whether she did the right thing. She admits that if it were her decision alone, she wouldn’t have gone through with it, but Justin was adamant about not wanting to be a father.
TopMob News reached out to Justin’s rep and did not immediately hear back.
With headlines focusing on stories about Justin Timberlake in Britney Spears’ new book, sources say the 42-year-old is also back in the studio working on new music. He and his wife, Jessica Biel, are doing well and staying busy raising their two sons, 8-year-old Silas and 2-year-old Phineas.
Britney feels Justin broke up with her very casually, like many celebrities do – with a quick, thoughtless message, as if it were just a temporary note.
She was so “devastated,” she recalls, she “could barely speak for months.”
After returning to her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, to heal from the breakup, Britney says Justin flew to see her. He personally delivered a framed letter expressing how much he missed her, writing, “I can’t breathe without you.”
Britney reflects on the aftermath of her breakup with Justin, referencing the accusations in his “Cry Me a River” music video. She describes feeling numb and lost in Louisiana while he seemed to be thriving in Hollywood.
She refers to a particularly awkward interview with Diane Sawyer from November 2003. Her father and manager set it up, and during the interview, Sawyer pressed her about the hurt she allegedly inflicted on Justin, which she now sees as a turning point in her life.
“I felt like I had been exploited,” she writes, “set up in front of the whole world.”
I’ve been following Britney for years, and it’s not a shock to hear her finally confirm those old rumors about kissing Wade Robson at a bar back when she was with Justin. She’s saying that all the talk about Justin being unfaithful is what really led her to even consider it. It’s sad, but it explains a lot about what she was going through at the time.
Otherwise, she writes, she was faithful to Justin.
Britney claims that despite appearances – like her frequent partying with Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and others – she wasn’t struggling with alcohol. Instead, she says she misused her ADHD medication, Adderall, to temporarily feel better about depression.
Twenty years ago, it was widely known that Britney Spears and Colin Farrell were involved, and she’s described their brief relationship as very passionate.
Britney described the scene as a chaotic scramble, saying everyone was intensely and physically engaged, almost like a street fight.
She later admitted she still had feelings for Justin when she went to the premiere of *The Recruit* with Colin on January 28, 2003. While speaking to reporters, Colin described their relationship as just a friendship, calling her a “sweet, sweet girl” but clarifying they weren’t dating.
In her memoir, *The Woman in Me*, Britney Spears shares that she briefly hoped for a real connection, but her romantic disappointments contributed to a growing sense of isolation and constant awkwardness.
TopMob News has reached out to Colin’s rep for comment but did not hear back.
Britney admits she was bored and heavily intoxicated when she spontaneously married her childhood friend, Jason Alexander, in Las Vegas in January 2004. The marriage was quickly canceled just 55 hours later.
She was surprised by her family’s over-the-top reaction—it felt like a huge deal—but she thought it was all in good fun.
Jason was arrested for trespassing on the day Britney Spears married Sam Asghari at her home on June 9, 2022, and he accepted the charges without formally admitting guilt.
Britney’s decision to shave her head in a Los Angeles salon in February 2007 was a reaction to years of being treated like an object, something that had plagued her since becoming famous as a young star. She’s also mentioned that she started taking Prozac around the time her album *Oops…I Did It Again* became a huge success, to help cope with the intense public attention.
She explains that since her teenage years, she’d constantly been judged on her appearance and told what people thought of her body. Cutting off her hair and rebelling were her reactions to these criticisms – ways of taking control and fighting back.
She was deeply heartbroken while fighting with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, for custody of their sons, Sean and Jayden, who are now 18 and 17 years old.
Looking back on those difficult weeks after her children, she admits she repeatedly fell apart and didn’t know how to cope. She famously hit a photographer’s car with an umbrella – an incident made even more dramatic by her fresh haircut – and remembers her thinking becoming increasingly immature as she struggled with severe postpartum depression and a divorce.
Kevin was later granted sole physical custody of their kids on Oct. 1, 2007.
As a lifestyle expert, I remember when Britney Spears’ conservatorship began back in February 2008. It started after a really difficult period for her, including a couple of emergency psychiatric holds in January. Unfortunately, what was initially meant to be temporary quickly turned into something that lasted for many years.
Britney Spears has revealed she pleaded with the court to have anyone but her father, Jamie Spears, control her conservatorship. Andrew Wallet served as a co-conservator alongside Jamie until March 2019.
She chose to stop trying to get out of her legal obligations quickly because she wanted to see her children as soon as possible.
She says she happily traded personal freedom for the chance to spend quiet time with her children. Nothing is more precious to her than her kids, and she would do anything for them.
Britney felt it was illogical that she wasn’t allowed to choose her own relationships while still being considered fit to work on television and perform for large audiences around the world every week.
Britney eventually realized she believed her father saw her only as a source of income, as if her purpose was simply to make money for the family.
She claims she wasn’t permitted to adjust her performance lineup, even when she requested to do so, during her very popular Las Vegas show at Planet Hollywood.
She explains that music was everything to her, but the conservatorship was incredibly damaging, essentially destroying her spirit.
As a longtime observer of this situation, I can tell you that Jamie has consistently maintained he always acted with Britney’s well-being as his top priority. He took a step back in 2019 due to his own health challenges, and ultimately fully resigned from the conservatorship in September 2021, but he’s repeatedly said everything he did was what he believed was best for her.
Britney describes how every aspect of her life, from her prescribed medications to her iPhone settings, was carefully watched and managed. She emphasizes the all-encompassing nature of this control, stating simply, “Everything.”
She claims her father’s criticism of her weight was particularly painful. “It stung more coming from my own father than from the press,” she writes, explaining that he frequently told her she looked overweight and needed to change.
As a longtime observer of celebrity wellness, it’s heartbreaking to look back at Britney’s conservatorship. For thirteen years, she largely kept quiet about what was happening in her personal life, but she has shared that she *did* attempt to speak out about it once. It’s a small detail, but it really highlights how controlled she felt during that time.
She recalls bringing up the conservatorship during a 2016 television interview, but that portion was never broadcast. She finds this particularly strange and noteworthy.
Britney describes being forced into rehab in early 2019. She says her father told her she’d face court and public embarrassment if she didn’t go. Once there, she was prescribed lithium and held for months, feeling like she was kept against her will.
She explained that she was severely restricted in what she could do. She wasn’t able to leave the house or drive, and required weekly blood donations. Even simple things like taking a private bath or closing her bedroom door were impossible.
According to her own messages, Britney reached out to her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, from the facility, asking for help. Jamie Lynn reportedly responded by telling her to accept the situation and stop resisting, as there was nothing she could do to change it.
Britney felt deeply hurt and betrayed, especially because she couldn’t understand how close her sister, Jamie Lynn, and their father had become. She was reaching out to Jamie Lynn for support, and felt abandoned when her sister didn’t seem to support her.
In early 2022 the siblings publicly sparred over Jamie Lynn’s memoir, Things I Should Have Said.
Britney writes in her book that Jamie Lynn publicly shared damaging and untrue stories about her. Despite this, she says she still loves her sister and is trying to replace her anger with compassion, both towards Jamie Lynn and anyone else who has hurt her – though she admits it’s a difficult process.
TopMob News contacted Jamie Lynn for a statement. In a 2022 interview on TopMob’s *Daily Pop*, she explained that while she and Britney have their disagreements, they ultimately share love and support for each other.
Britney discovered the #FreeBritney movement while in rehab in 2019. A nurse showed her YouTube videos that revealed fans were actively campaigning for her freedom.
Britney followed the growing public debate about her conservatorship as time passed.
Watching the documentaries made about my life was difficult,” she explained. “I know everyone involved had good intentions, but I was upset that some former friends talked to the filmmakers without speaking to me beforehand. It felt like a lot of assumptions were made about my thoughts and feelings.
Britney remembers feeling a huge sense of relief when Jamie was removed as her co-conservator in September 2021. She explains that the man who had frightened her throughout her life and controlled her as an adult – and who had severely damaged her self-esteem – was finally no longer in charge.
I remember exactly where I was when I found out – I was on vacation in Tahiti, November 12th, 2021, and my lawyer called with the incredible news. The judge had finally ended the conservatorship completely. It was such a relief!
Britney enjoys the freedom to share anything she likes on social media, and sometimes that includes tastefully blurred nude photos.
She understands some people don’t get why she enjoys taking self-portraits, whether nude or in different outfits. But she explains that after being photographed countless times by others, always being directed and posed for their benefit, she finds it empowering and joyful to pose how *she* wants and control the images herself.
Britney says the conservatorship caused her both physical and emotional harm, and she continues to experience migraines as a result.
“I don’t think my family understands the real damage that they did,” she writes.
She truly values her freedom, whether it’s simply disconnecting from social media without causing a fuss, or having the space to learn from her errors.
She explains that freedom means no longer feeling the need to impress anyone, whether in public or in private. It’s about embracing her imperfections, just like everyone else, and having the power to find happiness in a way that feels right for her, on her own schedule and according to her own values.
