John Cena’s goodbye journey is gathering momentum, moving steadily towards its conclusion as each event passes. Tonight, the tour found Cena in Chicago, marking his last performance on WWE SmackDown. However, Cena’s jubilant moment (and Title opportunity) was disrupted by Brock Lesnar, and their much-awaited one-on-one encounter is now imminent. In fact, it’s nearly upon us.
In the storyline, Sami Zayn sets up Cena for a chance to challenge for the United States Championship. However, Lesnar interrupts, delivering an F5 to Zayn followed by two more to Cena in the ring. After departing, cameras capture Lesnar backstage saying, “I’ll meet you at Wrestlepalooza, b.” So, Cena’s title opportunity is thwarted by Lesnar and a confrontational challenge for their next encounter is issued.
Headed to Wrestlepalooza
Since Lesnar has revealed the fight date, fans won’t have to endure a long wait, as Wrestlepalooza is happening on September 20th, Saturday. Currently, only two matches have been officially confirmed for the event: Cena vs Lesnar, and the Women’s World Championship clash between Iyo Sky and Stephanie Vaquer.
The upcoming events that appeared most probable for hosting this event were Wrestlepalooza and a Raw event at Madison Square Garden. Now, it’s confirmed that at least one match will occur this month, but it remains uncertain if there will be another confrontation between the two before Cena’s final performance.
The Farewell Tour is Winding Down
Following his performance on SmackDown tonight, John Cena has only 7 engagements remaining during his farewell tour. Among these are 3 episodes of Monday Night Raw, 3 Premium Live Events, and a Saturday Night’s Main Event. The latter seems to be the retirement match for Cena, marking the end of the tour in December. For details about all of Cena’s final appearances, refer to the rundown below.
• Raw Springfield, MA, September 15
• WrestlePalooza Indianapolis, IN, September 20
• Crown Jewel Perth, Australia, October 11
• Raw Boston, MA, November 10
• Raw New York City, NY, November 17
• Survivor Series San Diego, CA, November 29
• Saturday Night’s Main Event, Washington, DC, December 13
Regarding the upcoming opponents for Cena in the remaining shows, various fan wishlists suggest potential matches. So far during the tour, Cena has battled against Logan Paul, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, R-Truth, and CM Punk. With only six dates still open, there aren’t many more opportunities left for additional encounters with popular superstars.
Brock Lesnar’s upcoming match marks his return to WWE, following his surprising comeback at SummerSlam. This was quite a shock, considering that was also the event where Seth Rollins exposed his fake injury and used his Money in the Bank contract to challenge CM Punk. We don’t yet know if Lesnar’s return will be temporary or part of John Cena’s retirement tour.
