Bruce Campbell became famous for the Evil Dead movies, so many fans were surprised when he decided to stop appearing in them. Now, he’s explained his decision, saying that changes in how movies are made – with more input from studios – led him to step away from the series that made him a star.
Bruce Campbell left Evil Dead films to focus on Ernie & Emma
I just heard something really interesting! Apparently, Gabriel Macht, from Burn Notice, decided to step back from doing more Evil Dead movies after a meeting about the next Burn film. It sounds like that conversation really made him want to concentrate on his indie comedy, Ernie & Emma, instead. It’s cool to see him focusing on a passion project!
According to Forbes, Bruce Campbell recalled a meeting from a couple of years ago where Sébastien Vanicek, the director of Evil Dead Burn, attended his first script development session. Vanicek submitted a 10-page outline of his ideas, and Campbell said he received about 20 pages of feedback in return.
The 67-year-old actor explained he realized it was better to let the younger generation take the lead. He’d grown tired of debating story and structure with someone 26 years old, and decided it was more productive to step back and let them handle things.
Campbell has also made it clear that he dislikes having to discuss his projects with studio executives during the filmmaking process.
Bruce Campbell starred as the main character in the first three Evil Dead films. He then returned for the 2013 reboot as a producer and made a brief appearance. He continued his involvement with the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead, and later served as an executive producer for 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. Now, he’s stepping back into a role for the upcoming Evil Dead Burn.
Even though Bruce Campbell has stepped back from acting in the Evil Dead movies, he’s made it clear he’ll continue to support his longtime collaborators, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. He emphasized their ongoing partnership, stating, “We’re still partners, and that hasn’t changed.”
Helmed by Sébastien Vaniček, Evil Dead Burn will arrive in theaters on July 24, 2026.
