As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m finding out firsthand that there’s no comfort when bars of a different kind – the ones in a story – are closing around you. Renowned comic book writer Jeff Lemire is back with a gripping new series at BOOM! Studios titled “Minor Arcana“. This captivating comic revolves around Theresa, a daughter of a small-town “psychic” charlatan, who reluctantly comes home to nurse her ailing mother. What Theresa uncovers is that the town’s magic runs deeper than she initially thought, and she finds herself drawn back into the very place she yearned to leave. “Minor Arcana” is steadily gaining momentum with its tenth issue, keeping the spotlight firmly on Budd St. Pierre.
In a unique sneak peek, ComicBook showcases the 10th issue of Minor Arcana penned by Jeff Lemire and Steve Wands. The narrative unfolds in 1977, with the protagonist, Budd St. Pierre, finding himself incarcerated. Unlike his fellow prisoners who harbor doubts about their imprisonment, Budd acknowledges his guilt without resistance. As the story progresses, we catch a glimpse of the crime that landed Budd behind bars. Adapting to the monotony of prison life, Budd learns to do chores such as laundry, eats his prison rations, and spends time outside in the prison yard.
With no alternatives left, Budd seems resigned to his destiny. Yet, it appears that destiny holds something different in store. One evening, while resting in bed, Budd is unexpectedly visited by the spirit of his daughter, Vickie. Taken aback and struggling to comprehend, Budd gazes at his hands, finding it hard to accept what just transpired. In search of clarification, he makes his way to the prison library and stumbles upon a book about tarot cards, which plays a significant role in the storyline of “Minor Arcana“.
The tale of Budd St. Pierre carries on! As depicted in Minor Arcana #10, Budd is imprisoned, providing him ample opportunity to ponder over past errors. While he momentarily finds comfort in his established routine and delving into Tarot, the future of his bond with his wife and daughter remains unclear.
In simple terms, the acclaimed comic book author Jeff Lemire (known for “Descender” and “Black Hammer”), who has been recognized with New York Times bestseller titles and awards, is joining BOOM! Studios. This collaboration kickstarts an engaging ongoing series, which is deeply connected to tarot and should appeal to fans of his self-produced works as well as those fond of “Helen of Wyndhorn” and “Locke & Key”, but features an extended introductory chapter.
