While the cancellation of the ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale‘ reboot surprised many fans, Chloé Zhao, who was set to lead the project, wasn’t entirely shocked. The director of ‘Hamnet’ recently explained she’s choosing to accept the uncertainty surrounding why the revival was cancelled, preferring to see it as a mystery.
Chloé Zhao breaks silence on Buffy: New Sunnydale reboot getting canceled
Chloé Zhao recently discussed the cancellation of the planned Buffy series on Hulu during an interview at the 2026 Oscars. She had previously remained silent on the matter.
Speaking with Variety on the Academy Awards red carpet, she said she wasn’t surprised by recent developments. She described having a wonderful experience working with Sarah and the entire team, emphasizing that they always felt responsible for honoring the original show. Their main goal was to stay true to the source material and respect their fans. She believes everything happens for a reason and is open to seeing where things go from here.
When questioned about potentially taking her idea for a ‘Buffy’ reboot to another network, Zhao offered a playful response, simply saying, “Let the speculation begin.”
It’s become clear why Disney cancelled the planned revival series, even after a lot of initial excitement. Hulu, which would have streamed the show, felt the first episode was geared towards a younger audience and lacked scope. The writers revised the episode, and while executives liked the updated version better, Disney ultimately decided not to move forward with the series.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred in the original ‘Buffy’ series, revealed that one of the executives involved in the reboot openly disliked the original show. She said he repeatedly pointed out that he hadn’t even finished watching the series and didn’t think it was his kind of show, which contributed to the reboot being cancelled.
