‘Buffy’s 24-Year-Old Spin-off Is the Revival We Needed From the Start

Ever since Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, fans have been hoping for a continuation of the story. The character has remained popular through comics, books, and games. Although many shows from the past have been revived recently, it took 23 years for a new Buffy series to finally get the green light.

Following the events that leveled Sunnydale in the series finale, Buffy: New Sunnydale was planned as a continuation, set in the rebuilt town. The show would have centered on a new Slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to mentor her and connect with a new generation of viewers. With an acclaimed director like Chloé Zhao directing the pilot, the revival seemed poised for success. However, Hulu unexpectedly canceled the series, leaving fans puzzled. Fortunately, around the same time, another previously canceled show announced its return, potentially offering a hopeful model for future Buffy projects.

Hulu Officially Slayed the ‘Buffy’ Revival

It appears there were many issues that led to the cancellation of the planned ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ revival. Sarah Michelle Gellar announced the news herself on social media, likely as a way to address concerns after details about the project began to surface. According to reports, those involved with the show felt director Chloé Zhao wasn’t the right fit, which was unexpected considering her reputation. Zhao’s science fiction work has faced criticism before, notably with the film ‘Eternals.’ Since the cancellation, Zhao has offered limited comments, stating at the Academy Awards that things happen for a reason and to remain open to what the future holds.

Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed the planned Buffy reboot faced problems from the start, with one executive repeatedly expressing disapproval of the project. To make matters worse, the pilot script was leaked online, despite Gellar’s pleas for fans not to read it. Details emerged showing Buffy herself would have had a limited role, appearing under the alias Anne Summers, a name familiar to longtime fans. The reboot envisioned Buffy as a mentor to a new group of slayers, but her small amount of screen time in the pilot suggested she wouldn’t be a major part of the series. Although Buffy: New Sunnydale seems unlikely to move forward, the character might still have a future, especially with another revival series potentially paving the way.

‘Buffy’ Needs to Dust off Its 24-Year-Old Pitch

As a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I remember 2002 being a peak time for the show, right before it was about to end in 2003. But what many don’t realize is that plans for more Buffy were already in motion! Back in 2001, creator Joss Whedon teamed up with comic book legend Jeph Loeb to develop Buffy the Animated Series. They originally intended it for the Fox Kids programming block, but when that ended abruptly in late 2002, the project hit a snag. Thankfully, Fox revisited the idea in 2004 and expressed renewed interest in bringing the animated series to life.

New artwork was created, and most of the original actors returned to voice their characters, including Alyson Hannigan as Willow, Nicholas Brendon as Xander, and Anthony Stewart Head as Giles. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy, did not participate in these additional animated stories. Giselle Loren was chosen to replace her, as she had recently voiced Buffy in two video games – Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2002) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds (2003) – and also had other voice acting credits like Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited where she played Stargirl.

A four-minute animated presentation was made to pitch a Buffy cartoon, but the network decided not to move forward with it, and the idea was largely forgotten. The short pilot episode eventually appeared online and can still be found in various places. Surprisingly, thirteen scripts had even been written – some by well-known writers like Steve DeKnight and Jane Espenson – but it wasn’t enough to convince the network. Fans didn’t get another glimpse of more Buffy until Buffy: New Sunnydale. Although that revival was canceled, the recent announcement of a Firefly revival suggests there’s still hope for Buffy to return.

‘Buffy’s Long-Forgotten Animated Series Pitch Can Copy ‘Firefly’s Path Forward

It’s interesting that Firefly is getting a revival, considering both it and Buffy the Vampire Slayer were created by Joss Whedon but are now heading in very different directions. This new Firefly project could actually benefit Buffy. The revival will continue the story after the original season but before the movie Serenity. The entire cast is returning, though Nathan Fillion has confirmed they will be recasting the role previously held by the late Ron Glass. Essentially, the show will function as a true second season, letting the actors reprise their characters as if no time has passed, despite it being 24 years since the original aired.

It appears the planned revival of Firefly is progressing well, currently seeking a television network to air it. If things continue smoothly after the recent announcement, fans might finally get the second season they’ve been hoping for. The potential success of an animated Firefly could also offer a path forward for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Instead of a legacy sequel, Buffy could continue its story in a similar way to the comic books, which successfully continued the series with seasons eight through twelve.

Okay, so the live-action Buffy revival is officially off the table, but don’t count the Slayer out just yet. Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t thrilled with revisiting the role years ago, but an animated series? That feels much more doable – it’s voice work, after all. We’ve sadly lost Nicholas Brendan, which means some recasting would be necessary. But honestly, I’m kind of relieved. This isn’t about cashing in on nostalgia; Buffy: The Animated Series could be the continuation the show always deserved, a fresh start that truly honors the original. It feels like the right way to go.
