The reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” moves a step closer to featuring original characters and actors once more. As of now, Sarah Michelle Gellar is the only original cast member confirmed to return for the revival. With filming on the pilot for the “Buffy” reboot already completed, it appears she’ll be the sole returning cast member in the first episode if Hulu decides to greenlight the series. The main emphasis will shift towards the new generation, spearheaded by Ryan Kiera Armstrong’s new Slayer, rumored to be named Nova, and her own version of the Scooby Gang.
It’s quite likely that Gellar will be accompanied by some familiar characters, a pattern often seen in TV revivals and reboots. This combination of old and new actors seems fitting considering the series emphasizes on the theme of family and belonging, as stated by Gellar in her interview with IGN. She expressed that the essence of Buffy lies in the concept of “found family” and acceptance, making this new phase significant because it’s not just a revisit to the past but an honor to the original show’s core values: “For me, the essence of Buffy has always been about found family – that feeling of belonging and being loved for who you are – and that’s more important now than ever. That’s what makes this new chapter so meaningful; it’s not just revisiting the past but preserving the show’s original DNA.
Buffy’s Reboot Must Bring Back Multiple Characters (But Get The Balance Right)

As a die-hard cinephile, I’ve been pondering over Gellar’s recent insights about the upcoming series, and here’s my take on what they imply: The new show is shaping up to portray Nova’s companions as her chosen family, a support system she needs as she embarks on her mysterious journey as a Slayer. This hints at the strong bond that will be forged, providing a sense of belonging amidst her secret life.
However, these comments also underscore the likelihood of characters from the original series making a comeback. The reasoning behind this is simple: These characters held significant weight in Buffy’s life, both as pillars of her heroism and as integral parts of her everyday existence. Therefore, it wouldn’t sit right to exclude them from the narrative, even if their roles may be more restricted now. They were Buffy’s Slayer, but they were also so much more – an integral part of her life story, and a presence that should still resonate, even in a new, evolving capacity.
In the pilot episode, it appears that only Gellar has returned to Sunnydale, suggesting that Buffy Summers and other members of the Scooby Gang may no longer reside there, as the town has been rebuilt. Over time, Gellar’s relationships with the others might have evolved, potentially leading to some distance between her and a few of them due to grown-up realities. However, if a significant new danger emerges, it would follow the spirit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Gellar to seek assistance from trusted allies such as Giles or Willow.
Anthony Head and Alyson Hannigan are both currently active in their respective careers, and more recently, Hannigan worked together with Gellar for the Ask2BSure campaign focusing on meningitis awareness. This collaboration led to rumors that Hannigan might reprise her role for the upcoming reboot. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, it would be surprising if the reboot moves forward without Willow being a part of it.
Charisma Carpenter recently mentioned that she’s not currently involved in the Buffy remake, but there’s a possibility she could reprise her role as Cordelia in the future. Given her character had a compelling storyline, it didn’t conclude satisfactorily, and reintroducing her might give the character a fitting resolution. The Audible series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story saw several original cast members return, including Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Amber Benson (Tara), James Marsters (Spike), and Emma Caulfield (Anya), which indicates that the actors may be open to reprising their roles.
Striking a balance is essential in this scenario. The responsibility lies with the new characters since being a Slayer is a long-standing family tale (however, following Willow’s spell, the reboot must handle this shift somehow). It should not simply transform into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 without acknowledging the comics, but equally neglecting the original characters would be squandering an opportunity. Achieving this balance is challenging, yet the comments so far and its cautious approach indicate that it might succeed.
All seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are available to stream on Hulu.
