Just like with Destiny 2, the developers at Bungie are aiming for Marathon to be successful enough to receive ongoing updates and new content. They’ve already revealed plans for the game’s first two seasons to give players an idea of what’s coming.
The first season launches alongside the game on March 5th, 2026. Called ‘Death Is the First Step,’ the season will run until June and introduces a new area called the Cryo Archive. This is a challenging end-game zone aboard the Marathon ship where players will solve security puzzles, unlock frozen vaults, and encounter a powerful entity that even the UESC fears.
As Season 1 progresses, players will gain access to Ranked Mode, where they can earn special rewards based on their ranking. Throughout the season, look forward to the C.A.R.R.I. event, a new weapon, additional implants, and various game balancing adjustments, as detailed in the image below.
The second season begins in June and ends in August, and it’s now simply called Nightfall.
Good news for Marathon players: all future updates after the game’s release will be free. The developers confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that you won’t need to buy any extra content or expansions to get them.
Bungie hasn’t revealed many details about the second season, but they’ve hinted at a nighttime version of the Night Marsh area, a new design for Runners, and a new feature called The Cradle. The Cradle will let you customize your Runner’s strengths and weaknesses, giving you more control over its stats.
With each new Season in Marathon, your progress will be reset in a few areas. This includes your equipped gear, progress on contracts, standing with factions, and your player level.
Cosmetics you get through gameplay or buy are permanently yours, and your progress in the Codex carries over. Any progress you’ve made on liaison contracts will also be saved.
Seasonal resets keep the game challenging and make finding loot feel rewarding. They also offer a fresh start for both returning players and newcomers, so everyone can jump in without feeling at a disadvantage. Each reset is like a new beginning, introducing new gameplay, challenges, and discoveries, allowing players to build their progress from the ground up.
