Bungie Has Made Major Upgrades to Marathon Based on New Leak

Bungie’s new game, Marathon, has generated a lot of excitement ever since it was announced, particularly because it’s a big departure from their previous story-driven series. Instead of a single-player experience, Marathon is a multiplayer, sci-fi shooter aiming to rival games like Arc Raiders. Although Bungie and Sony plan to release it in 2026, much of the testing has been private. While it’s been difficult for players to get a feel for the game, recent leaks have offered a glimpse of what’s to come.

Footage from a recent closed test of Bungie’s new Marathon game has leaked online, giving fans a long and detailed look at the upcoming extraction shooter. Despite efforts to remove the footage due to non-disclosure agreements, it continues to reappear on various platforms, revealing new maps, a redesigned user interface, and significant visual upgrades. This leak provides the most comprehensive view yet of how the game is progressing after months of development.

Sony reports around 80,000 players participated in the October test session on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. This is a strong number, especially considering some players were limited by non-disclosure agreements and concerns about the game’s art style, which prevented them from sharing their experiences publicly. Recent gameplay clips highlight improvements Bungie made based on feedback from those first tests.

The videos showcase complete matches, how to use the game menus, character setups, and exciting moments from all three maps used in the test: Dire Marsh, Perimeter, and Outpost. Players who took part in the April Alpha test will remember Perimeter, but this October version has been significantly improved with better lighting, clearer visuals, and a more immersive atmosphere.

The most exciting part of the revealed footage is a brand-new map called Outpost, which Bungie hasn‘t shown before. Unlike the expansive Perimeter map, Outpost is designed for intense, close-range battles inside buildings, with narrow hallways and winding paths. The footage also showcased a new challenge called Heat Cascade Protocol. This event causes fiery debris to fall outdoors, slowly damaging players’ shields and health if they don’t find shelter. It pushes teams inside or behind cover, adding a strategic element of timing to the already tense extraction gameplay.

Even though a lot of information was leaked, it all comes from a very early test version of the game. Bungie has explained that these tests are meant to help them figure out what’s working and what needs improvement as they develop Marathon. They’re also planning to release a new video showing how the game has changed since the closed alpha test, meaning we’ll likely get more official updates soon.

Because so many people are online and video games take a long time to make, leaks are happening more and more often. Despite companies’ best efforts, things like early gameplay videos, concept art, and ideas frequently get out. These leaks can give players a preview of upcoming games, but it’s important to remember that games are always changing during development, so leaked content might not be final.
