Bungo Stray Dogs Is Getting a Prequel After 10 Years

Among the many fantastic shows I’ve encountered lately, none quite captivate me like “Bungo Stray Dogs,” penned by Kafka Asagiri and brought to life by Sango Harukawa’s stunning illustrations. This manga made its debut in 2012 and remains a gripping read as we eagerly wait for the sixth season of the anime adaptation.

The narrative focuses on Atsushi Nakajima, an orphan with a mysterious past who finds himself in a desperate situation – on the brink of starvation. In a bid to survive, he resorts to stealing money, but fate has other plans. When he saves a drowning man named Osamu Dazai, he’s introduced to Kunikida, an intriguing colleague who sets Atsushi on a thrilling adventure that unravels the mysteries of his past and plunges him into a world filled with supernatural abilities.

In his continued exploration, Atsushi discovers they hail from a Detective Agency teeming with individuals endowed with extraordinary powers. Their ongoing assignment appears to intertwine with Atsushi, as Dazai reveals his hidden truth. The fifth season premiered in 2023, but the production studio hasn’t confirmed whether there will be a sixth season yet – hinting at its possible return, though it may take several years given the anime is nearly on par with the manga. In the interim, enthusiasts can anticipate a prequel manga derived from the franchise’s third light novel authored by Asagiri. Harukawa will resume his role as artist, narrating the formation of the Armed Detective Agency in the manga that starts publication on March 4th in Young Ace.

Starting on March 4 in the Young Ace issue 4/2025, there’s a fresh Manga series titled “Bungo Stray Dogs: The Early Tales of the Detective Agency.” This is an adaptation from the 3rd Light Novel by Adachi Tomori and it takes us back 12 years before the main story, revealing the origins of the detective agency.

What Is the Plot of Bungo Stray Dogs: The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency?

2015 saw the publication of the Japanese light novel, with its English version following suit five years later in 2020. This tale unfolds a dozen years prior to the present timeline, preceding the establishment of the agency, and centers around the encounter between Yukichi Fukuzawa and Ranpo Edogawa. In this story, Fukuzawa, acting as a bodyguard, learns that his client has been murdered in her office, prompting him to investigate the crime scene. Meanwhile, Ranpo, who is on the scene seeking employment, accuses the secretary of being the culprit upon making his deduction.

In no time, Fukuzawa recognizes the boy as extraordinary and decides to mentor him. Their initial assignment sends them scurrying to a neighborhood playhouse on edge following an ominous warning about death. This task turns out to be a test for the pair as they strive to prevent a looming murder. Once they complete the mission, they set up an agency specializing in tackling perilous jobs that leave the law enforcement baffled. The opening four episodes of Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 were based on the light novel, but it wasn’t until now that a manga version became available.

This confirmation comes via the Young Ace 4/2025 cover spotted by MangaMoguraRE on X.
