The show features a vibrant group of characters, and each one is named after a famous author. Their powers often relate to the author’s writings. Bungo Stray Dogs blends fantasy and reality in its character inspirations, and sometimes, a character’s life will even mirror the author’s – for example, sharing the same birthday.

Honestly, when it comes to understanding the story, details like a character’s height, weight, or zodiac sign aren’t really important. But, and this is what I love, those little details actually help these incredibly dramatic characters feel so much more real. It’s fascinating how they bring them to life, even though they’re wildly different from the people who inspired them!

Central Members of the Armed Detective Agency Drive the Story

With so many characters in Bungo Stray Dogs – each belonging to different groups – it can be helpful to understand what makes each one unique. Knowing their individual traits really clarifies their role in the story.

Yukichi Fukuzawa is the 45-year-old president of the Armed Detective Agency. At 6’1″, he’s the second tallest member. Born on January 10th, he’s a Capricorn, and those who know him say his personality perfectly matches the sign. Fukuzawa is a natural leader who deeply cares for his team, and he’s willing to make significant sacrifices to keep them safe, even putting himself in harm’s way.

At the start of the series, Ranpo is 26 years old, though he joined the agency at just 14. Born on October 21st, he has a confident, even arrogant, personality typical of those born under the sign of Libra. While he readily proclaims himself the world’s greatest detective, he surprisingly lacks confidence when it comes to simple, everyday tasks. He’s also relatively short, standing at 5’6″, compared to many of his colleagues.

Atsushi is of average height, standing at 5’7″. Born on May 5th, he’s a Taurus, though he doesn’t always fit the typical Taurus personality. While Tauruses are usually strong-willed and confident in their beliefs, Atsushi’s difficult life experiences have made him question his own judgment. Despite this, he’s a very compassionate person who consistently prioritizes the needs of the agency above his own, often feeling he doesn’t deserve good things.

I’m a huge fan of Osamu Dazai from Bungo Stray Dogs – he’s such a complex character! He’s 22 when the story really kicks off, and while he can be a bit of a mess when it comes to making choices, that’s part of what makes him so interesting. Born on June 19th, he’s a Gemini, and honestly, you can see that duality in everything he does. He’s constantly battling his own demons and desperately wants to make up for things he’s done in the past – his mental health is a huge part of who he is, and it’s definitely a striking aspect of his personality. Oh, and he’s not super tall – about 5’7″, which is kinda surprising given how commanding he can be!

Doppo Kunikida, a 22-year-old member of the Agency, is known for his diligence and sharp mind. Born on August 30th, he’s a typical Virgo – hardworking, organized, and intelligent. While he appreciates a bit of excitement, Kunikida prefers things to go exactly as planned, which can be difficult with an unpredictable colleague like Dazai. He’s also the tallest member of the Agency, standing at 6’2″.

Bungo Stray Dogs’ Armed Detective Agency Puts Each Character In the Spotlight

I’ve been observing Junichiro Tanizaki, who’s 18 years old and stands a little over 5’8″ at 174cm. He’s a Leo, born on July 24th. He has someone he refers to as his younger sister, Naomi, who’s an Aries – she was born on March 26th. She appears to be a high school student, so likely between 15 and 18 years old. Interestingly, Junichiro mentioned her “real” family, which suggests they aren’t actually siblings. What really catches people’s attention isn’t their family connection, but the unusual and intense bond they share.

Kenji Miyazawa and Kyoka Izumi are the youngest members of the agency, both being only fourteen years old. Because they’re still growing, their current heights – Kenji at 5’2” and Kyoka at 4’10” – might make them the shortest members, at least for now. Interestingly, like Kunikida, Kenji was born under the sign of Virgo (on August 27th), but they express the traits of the sign in very different ways.

Kenji is young and still developing his skills, and growing up in the countryside hasn’t fully prepared him. Kyoka, a Scorpio born on November 4th, is different. She shows strong loyalty and determination as she works through personal challenges.

Born on December 7th, Akiko Yosano is 25 years old when the story begins. She’s a gifted healer who is both strong and caring. However, she doesn’t hesitate to firmly put down anyone who disrespects her. Standing at 5’5″, her height complements her assertive and powerful personality.

Katai Taiyama used to work for the Armed Detective Agency, but now he’s an information broker. He’s a very anxious and distrustful person who has trouble interacting with others, which makes his job difficult. Born on January 22nd, Katai is 23 years old when we first meet him. As an Aquarius, he’s a natural loner and prefers to keep to himself—so much so that his colleague, Kunikida, considers him a recluse. He’s of average height, around 5’9″, and generally tries to blend in and avoid being noticed.
