‘Buy Bitcoin’ sign that photobombed Janet Yellen sells for $1M

During a 2017 Congressional hearing, a yellow notepad bearing the words “Buy Bitcoin” was conspicuously displayed behind Janet Yellen, then the chair of the United States Federal Reserve. This notable prop has now fetched an impressive price of sixteen Bitcoins (BTC) – equivalent to over one million dollars – at auction.

Justin, who goes by the alias “Squirrekkywrath,” emerged as the successful bidder in the Bitcoin auction on Scarce City last week. The bidding concluded on April 25, around 11:00 pm UTC.

At a House Financial Services Committee hearing in July 2017, Christian Langalis produced a sign which he composed himself and showed to the cameras after successfully claiming a spot behind Janet Yellen.

Langalis was asked to leave after accidentally crashing into photos being taken of Yellen, as props are forbidden during hearings.

At that point in time, according to CNBC’s report, Bitcoin experienced a surge in value following the display of the signal, with its price rising by approximately 3.7%, exceeding $2,418.

After Scarce City takes its 15% fee, Langalis is set to pocket around $875,000, or 13.6 BTC.

In the announcement accompanying the listing, Langalis expressed relief and excitement to “make public once again this number that had been hidden away in my sock drawer” for Bitcoin users.

The note in the listing mentions that a particular page was taken away from the notepad right after the hearing, but later on, it was reattached using transparent archival wire.

An alternate rendition: On the yellow notepad, there’s an invisible early version of the famed doodles, together with jottings about monetary policy discussions and Bitcoin.

In the year 2019, Langalis manufactured and successfully marketed 21 identical signs, each fetching an average transaction price equivalent to 0.8 Bitcoins. This translates to approximately $51,300 in current value.

According to the listing, the replicas are showcased in the workspaces of Paradigm, Blockchain Capital, Castle Island Ventures, and the crypto research group Coin Center.

According to Bloomberg’s report, Langalis intended to allocate the proceeds from his recent sale towards supporting a Bitcoin-related software initiative.
