Should the California Schemin’ trailer be called Caledonian schemin’?
British rappers often fall into a stereotype – looking rough and seeming unable to form coherent thoughts – which doesn’t feel authentic. However, pioneers like Derek B & Rakim were truly groundbreaking, and the story of the California Schemin’ duo offers a compelling look at how close the UK rap scene came to being derailed by two opportunistic individuals.
Is the California Schemin’ trailer a true story?
This movie is based on a surprisingly true story and follows two young, ambitious Scottish rappers, Gavin and Billy. They come up with a bold plan to get a record deal: pretending to be American hip hop artists. As they start to gain popularity, their web of lies grows, and their friendship is strained.
Based on?
This is based on a true story, documented in the 2013 film “The Great Hip Hop Hoax.”
All the behind the scenes talent…..
“California Schemin’” was produced by Danny Page (Homefront Productions), Michael Mendelsohn (Patriot Pictures), Paul Aniello (Tartan Bridge), and Simon Kay. Funding came from Screen Scotland through The National Lottery, with additional financing from Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital. James McAvoy stars in the film and unexpectedly offered to direct after reading the script, much to the producers’ delight. James Corden also appears in the movie, and based on the trailer, it looks like a very entertaining film.
