Call of Duty will no longer get back-to-back Black Ops and Modern Warfare games — “We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental.”

Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is still in development, but the team has announced a major change for the future of the series. They’re ending the practice of releasing new Black Ops and Modern Warfare games in consecutive years.

The main reason, according to a recent blog post, is to ensure each yearly Call of Duty release feels fresh and innovative, rather than just offering small improvements. While specific plans haven’t been revealed yet, they promise more details soon.

Traditionally, Call of Duty games alternated between different sub-series, developed by studios like Infinity Ward and Treyarch. However, 2023 saw back-to-back Modern Warfare releases with Modern Warfare 3 following Modern Warfare 2, and this was set to continue in 2025 with Black Ops 7 after Black Ops 6.

Next week, players will get a chance to try out Black Ops 7. The developers also pledge to provide an unusually high level of ongoing support for the game, and they’ve acknowledged player concerns about recent releases. They’re committed to meeting – and exceeding – player expectations moving forward, recognizing the passionate Call of Duty community deserves the best.

Call of Duty faced increased competition and criticism this year

The Call of Duty series typically dominates annual sales, rivaled only by Rockstar games. However, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 encountered tougher competition this year. Electronic Arts released Battlefield 6 in October, and it quickly became the best-selling game in the U.S., with the publisher also claiming the title of best-selling shooter of the year. Black Ops 7 has also received criticism for its use of low-quality, AI-generated art, a problem that started with the previous game, Black Ops 6. It will be interesting to see how the developers respond to player feedback and how they plan future game development to prevent similar issues with consecutive releases.
