Call the Midwife boss teases prequel cast – including new and original favourites

Call the Midwife is facing big changes, as creator Heidi Thomas hints that season 15 will mark the end of a significant chapter for the show.

Speaking at the TopMob Covers Party 2026, she acknowledged that everyone experiences sadness when things change. She explained that, much like life, the show Call the Midwife is always evolving, with both its characters and storylines constantly developing.

The popularity of Call the Midwife is clear, as the show is now expanding with a movie and a series that tells the story of its origins.

The next installment will likely be filmed in Australia and will include some of the actors we’ve already seen in the series.

The upcoming prequel, scheduled to premiere this Christmas, is set during World War II. It will feature the younger years of characters Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan. According to Thomas, Sister Monica Joan isn’t as young as initially thought when considering the timeline, but she’s still at her best.

Viewers will meet three new midwives who are just starting out and quickly find themselves facing challenging situations in the East End.

What’s fascinating to me is the dynamic in this world: when war starts, men are typically in power, but that quickly changes. Women step up and take control of everything as the men are sent to work supporting the war effort at home or are deployed overseas.

The show will focus on women discovering their power and becoming confident individuals. It’s all about celebrating strong women and their journeys.

Thomas pointed out a curious paradox about the new series, noting that while things evolve, some core elements always remain the same.

Okay, so Season 15 of Call the Midwife really threw a lot at its characters – and at us, the viewers! Beyond the usual incredible stories of birth and family, this season dealt with some seriously tough cases, like dealing with rabies and uncovering the lingering effects of slavery. But what I found especially compelling was how the show explored the big shifts happening in society, particularly with the rise of the Women’s Liberation Movement and how that impacted the nuns and midwives as they navigated their roles and beliefs. It wasn’t just medical drama; it was a real look at a changing world.

Both Rosalind and Sister Veronica are facing personal challenges. Rosalind is estranged from her parents to protect her romance with Cyril, and Sister Veronica has revealed she wants a child, which makes her commitment to religious life uncertain.

This Sunday’s episode is packed with drama. A woman orders food from Violet for a family party, but everyone who eats it falls ill that same night. At the same time, Fred is stuck overseeing plumbing repairs in Cyril’s apartment, where the old lead pipes are falling apart.

In other news, a woman is planning a home birth to respect her family’s customs and her husband’s, and Timothy is thrilled to have passed his medical exams. He’s now deciding whether to become a general practitioner or a surgeon.
