We know a little about the upcoming Call the Midwife movie, but two important things are still unknown: who will star in it and where it will be filmed.
When the new season of Call the Midwife, set in the 1970s, was announced last May, creator Heidi Thomas explained that it felt like a good opportunity for the show’s familiar characters to step away from Poplar for a bit and face new challenges in a different setting.
With more births happening in hospitals and changes within the National Health Service, home birth midwifery teams have faced limitations. Now, they have an opportunity to rediscover their core purpose and demonstrate their value – and their work promises to be truly inspiring when documented.
Thomas hasn’t shared any details about who will be in the new movie, but she did mention Australia as a likely filming location. She also hinted during an interview at the TopMob Covers Party 2026 that they’re considering two other possible locations.
The issue isn’t really about questioning Australia itself, but rather choosing between three possibilities: Australia, and two others.
Thomas said they’re holding off on revealing the information for now, but Sister Julienne will announce everything in the season 15 finale, so viewers won’t have to wait long to find out.
As a huge Call the Midwife fan, I’m thrilled to hear there’s a movie in the works! And that’s not all – we’re getting season 16 soon, plus a prequel series! It’s set during World War Two and is coming out this Christmas, which is fantastic news. I can’t wait to see the origins of the characters and the world we’ve all come to love.
The new story will focus on the earlier years of Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan. Though Sister Monica Joan isn’t as young as people think when you look at the dates, she’s still at her best, explained Thomas.
The show will introduce three new midwives who are unfamiliar with the East End and quickly find themselves facing challenging situations.
What’s fascinating to me is that in this world, while men initially lead during wartime, women quickly take control of everything as the men are sent to support the war effort domestically or are deployed overseas. She explained that this shift happens very quickly.
The show will focus on women discovering their power and becoming confident individuals. It’s all about celebrating strong women and their journeys.
Thomas pointed out a curious similarity between himself and the current show: despite all the changes, some things always stay the same.
As the original Call the Midwife series nears its end, it’s unclear whether creator Heidi Thomas will continue the prequel for several more seasons or begin working on something new.
