It’s that time of year again – time to get comfy with some snacks and drinks and settle in to watch the Call the Midwife Christmas special on TV.
For the second year in a row, the show will be presented in two one-hour segments. These episodes will feature stories in both Poplar and a new, distant location, as hinted at by Laura Main, who plays Shelagh Turner, several months ago.
She explained that the new cases are taking the team into uncharted areas, both in terms of location and the situations they’re facing, even within their familiar neighborhood of Poplar.
Heidi Thomas, the creator and writer, added that she has fond memories of Christmas 1971, growing up in the 1970s. She was nine years old at the time, and it felt like the quintessential Christmas experience. This personal connection fuels the show’s nostalgic and inclusive portrayal of those festive seasons.
We definitely include Hanukkah and celebrate the Jewish festival of lights. Plus, we feature traditions from China and Hong Kong, which adds a lot of depth and variety.
It’s a real mix of different communities, not just a single one. It’s wonderful to see people connect, especially during tough times, and create something positive and hopeful.
So, what else can you expect? And when can you watch it?

Call the Midwife Christmas special 2025 plot: what will happen?

As a big ‘Call the Midwife’ fan, I just heard Jenny Agutter is hinting that the Christmas special is going to be pretty intense! Apparently, it jumps between Poplar and Hong Kong, and she’s saying we can expect some really difficult and heartbreaking moments – even talk of death and destruction. Sounds like it’s going to be an emotional watch!
Violet and Fred go to Hong Kong to see her son, only to discover that the Branch House in Kowloon has tragically collapsed, resulting in several deaths, according to an official statement.
A rescue effort is quickly put together, and the team at Nonnatus House rushes to make arrangements to leave and help.
Cyril is surprised when someone asks him for a favor. Elsewhere, Rosalind and Joyce are throwing a Christmas party, and Sister Catherine finds herself helping two pregnant Irish travelers who are living in a camp.

I really enjoy following Abby Robinson’s work as the Drama Editor at TopMob – she’s got a great eye for TV dramas and comedies! Before TopMob, she was a TV writer at Digital Spy and also wrote content for Mumsnet. She’s clearly well-qualified, with both a degree and a postgraduate diploma in English Studies.
