Call the Midwife Shocks Fans with Hidden Doctor Who Reference!

It’s official: Call the Midwife‘s Sister Monica Joan is a Whovian.

In this week’s BBC period drama (aired on 26th January), conversation veered towards leisure activities after the introduction of Sister Catherine, who shared her previous hobbies of trampolining and golf, now focusing on origami instead.

An unexpected choice indeed.

In my free moments, you might find me quite unexpectedly engrossed in the world of Doctor Who – yes, it’s Sister Monica Joan we’re talking about!

However, as Nonnatus House’s TV was malfunctioning and there was a scarcity of engineers because of the persistent strikes, she found herself bereft of her beloved hobby, which left her feeling rather dejected.

“For now, I must endure,” she said with the weight of the world on her shoulders.

However, after some time, her tolerance for the TV seemed to wane, and in the final moments of the show, she angrily struck the television with her walking cane. To her surprise, the Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee, suddenly appeared.

In the second installment of his initial tale, “Spearhead from Space,” broadcast on January 10, 1970, an intriguing series of meteorites descended upon a forested area in Essex. These celestial bodies were found to be energy sources housing an extraterrestrial entity with a penchant for plastic and ambitious aspirations to conquer the world.

Sister Monica Joan certainly wouldn’t approve…

During the span from 1970 to 1974, Jon Pertwee captivated viewers with his charismatic flair over five exciting seasons of the show, eventually making way for Tom Baker to take up the role.

He was also the first Doctor to be broadcast in colour.

In a 1973 interview with TopMob magazine, he expressed that he hadn’t truly discovered who he was until Doctor Who.

In another recent interview, he characterized the role as thrilling, bold, and one of the most coveted leading roles on TV. He also shared a quote from The Web of Fear (1968): “There’s nothing more unsettling and disconcerting than encountering a Yeti or some similar creature occupying the bathroom in Tooting Bec.

Indeed, it’s clear that the Third Doctor wouldn’t have existed without the spirited companion Jo, portrayed by Katy Manning. In the 2023 miniseries Tales from the TARDIS, she paid homage to her dearest friend by donning one of his signature jackets during filming.

She remarked, “It seems and even smells like it, it’s brimming with Pertwee! I’ve taken shelter beneath it during countless chilly settings.

“Whenever someone has a velvet jacket on now, I get butterflies in my stomach. Velvet hugs!”
