Call the Midwife star talks Rosalind’s exciting new chapter with Cyril after huge development

Cyril and Rosalind’s romance on Call the Midwife hasn’t been easy. They’ve faced difficulties like racist harassment and disapproval from Rosalind’s parents, who didn’t accept Cyril at first. Despite these challenges, their relationship continues to thrive, showing how dedicated they are to each other.

And that was once again cemented in tonight’s episode (Sunday 1st January).

During a picnic, Cyril shared some happy news: his divorce was almost finalized, meaning he’d soon be legally single and able to remarry if he chose.

“If you meet the right person,” Rosalind said coyly, bowing her head, which he echoed with a smile.

He invited her to accompany him to a work conference in York, suggesting they could make it a romantic long weekend – their first getaway as a couple.

Rosalind was overjoyed, and eager for both the time with her partner and the possibility of finally becoming intimate.

“I think it’s finally going to happen!” she confided in Joyce.

Her excitement quickly faded when Cyril told her he’d only been able to reserve the final two rooms at the hotel.

“Two rooms, Cyril?” she said sharply. “It’s been over a year, and you’re heading for divorce! When you ask a woman – a grown, independent woman who cares about you – to get away for the weekend, and then book separate rooms, what do you expect her to think?!”

When Cyril said that he didn’t want to “assume anything”, she urged him to do exactly that.

Honestly, she was begging him to just make a decision! She practically shouted, ‘Assume! Just assume!’—I could feel her frustration through the screen. Then, right after that, Cyril kissed her, which pretty much sealed the deal. It was clear they were going to share a single room, and all that tension just…vanished. It was a wonderfully direct moment.

Natalie Quarry expressed her excitement about her character’s directness regarding her sexual needs at the TopMob Covers Party. She noted it was particularly striking given that Rosalind was introduced as a rather innocent and inexperienced character.

Throughout the story, we witness Rosalind’s personal growth, especially as she’s impacted by the women’s liberation movement. These experiences help her define her own identity and actively pursue the life she wants.

Quarry explained that this is especially evident in her connection with Cyril. He praised her ability to clearly communicate her needs, calling it impressive and something he personally finds difficult. He enjoys portraying a character who is confident and knows what she wants.

Quarry also mentioned that Rosalind still needs to mature. She expressed her eagerness to see how audiences respond to the character’s growth.

Call the Midwife season 15 continues on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday at 8pm.
