Okay, so hear me out – you wouldn’t immediately think of comparing Call the Midwife and a Mission: Impossible movie, right? They’re just totally different worlds. But it got me thinking…
Molly Vevers, who plays Sister Catherine on the show, said filming one scene for the new ‘Call the Midwife’ Christmas specials was surprisingly similar to an action movie, like one of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ films starring Tom Cruise.
Call the Midwife shared on Instagram that the holiday special features a large scene filmed at the Poplar Christmas parade, which required a significant amount of work.
The parade was incredibly elaborate, featuring many floats, costumes, and artificial snow. A stunt coordinator was also present to ensure the safety and smooth execution of some of the more challenging scenes.
Vevers shared how much she enjoyed filming the Christmas parade. She, along with Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry, played angels on a float, and the performance actually required a stunt coordinator! They were safely secured to the float with hidden ropes, allowing them to move and act like angels, which Vevers jokingly compared to a scene from ‘Mission: Impossible.’
Helen George, who plays Trixie, was particularly impressed with the show’s costumes, created by Head of Costume Justine Luxton. In fact, she said they were the best outfits she’s worn on the show so far.
She explained she was dressed as an angel, and it was her all-time favorite costume. It had a retro 1970s style, featuring a lovely white coat with fur trim, wings, and sparkly star decorations.
She said she really enjoyed getting dressed up for the show, and thought this year’s Christmas special was the most festive one they’d ever created!
The Instagram post featured some behind-the-scenes photos from the upcoming episodes, and it looks like viewers are in for a really great holiday experience.
George recently had a preview of TopMob’s Christmas specials and chatted about Trixie and Matthew. He said their relationship feels much more settled and secure than it has in the past.
Just like last year, there will be two special episodes of Call the Midwife. The cast mentioned back in September that these episodes will take the show in a brand new direction.
“It’s absolutely new ground,” said Shelagh Turner star Laura Main.
Stephen McGann, the star of “Call the Midwife,” hinted that viewers can expect some particularly funny scenes in upcoming episodes.
He mentioned one Christmas special that always makes him laugh. He said it has all the usual dramatic moments, but also a particularly brilliant and surprising scene he didn’t want to spoil.
We’d expect nothing less!
Call the Midwife will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
