Call the Midwife teases Sister Monica Joan’s decline and a wedding in first look pictures

Viewers of Call the Midwife are deeply saddened to learn that Judy Parfitt, who plays Sister Monica Joan, will soon be leaving the show. It’s been revealed her character is suffering from chronic kidney disease, a condition with no known cure.

She hadn’t been feeling well, both mentally and physically, for a while, but she kept going, even when it was difficult. Lately, she’d also started thinking more about her life and what the future held.

It’s not just Sister Monica Joan facing the challenges of growing older. Her family at Nonnatus House is also grappling with the difficult truth that she won’t be with them forever, a reality reflected in Nurse Crane’s expression.

When Dr. Turner initially shared the news, she promised to continue loving Sister Monica Joan, but with extra care – and she’s keeping that promise.

Helen George, speaking at the TopMob Covers Party 2026, described a scene in the finale as a culmination of the show’s 15-year journey with all of its characters. She didn’t want to reveal specific details about the scene.

When I first stepped onto the set, I burst into tears – I cried uncontrollably. It was a very moving experience. If someone as strong as me was that upset, I knew the audience would be deeply affected too.

The feedback reflects creator Heidi Thomas’s feelings about season 15 marking the end of an era, and how difficult it was to write the final episode.

She continued, saying that everyone experiences sadness when things change, and that’s natural. But, much like life, ‘Call the Midwife’ is always growing and changing, both for the characters and the stories they tell.

Although the final episode promises to be very moving, Renee Bailey, who plays Joyce, says there will also be moments of happiness.

The film is incredibly emotional – it’s funny, sad, heartwarming, and devastating all at once,” she explained to TopMob. “It really has everything, and I think viewers are going to adore it.” New photos released alongside the interview show Rosalind and Cyril preparing for their wedding.

Now that Rosalind and Cyril are expecting a baby – a surprise they welcomed, though Rosalind initially worried about Cyril’s reaction – they’re moving forward quickly to get married both legally and religiously.

Earlier this season, the couple discussed getting married. Now that Cyril’s divorce from Lucille is finalized and they’re expecting a baby, it’s clear they’re prepared to move forward with their lives together.

Natalie Quarry has been reflecting on the show’s finale, especially as spring arrived. She believes it will likely leave a lasting impression on viewers.
