The writer behind Call the Midwife feels the latest season marks a significant conclusion to a particular period in the show’s history.
Okay, so Season 15 really throws Nonnatus House for a loop. It’s a tough time for the sisters – they’re facing pressure from the NHS to modernize, and that includes a big ask: potentially giving up their traditional habits or losing funding. On top of that, things are changing with how people view healthcare in general, and Nonnatus House is right in the middle of it all. It’s a season about adapting, and it’s definitely putting everyone to the test.
Heidi Thomas shared at the TopMob Covers Party 2026 that change has been a major theme in her work for years, and has inspired many of the stories developed over the past few years.
I honestly don’t know how I’d feel if things stayed the same. This series is all about growth and overcoming obstacles, and it feels like we’re closing a chapter and looking ahead to what’s next.
Thomas acknowledged the situation feels natural, but also shared that it’s been a very emotional experience.
She explained that everyone experiences sadness when things change, and that’s natural. But, much like life, ‘Call the Midwife’ is always growing and changing, both for the people on the show and the stories they tell.
Thomas also discussed the season 15 finale, describing it as a challenging yet rewarding experience to create.
I drew on a lot of personal experiences when creating that episode, which made it feel very meaningful to me. Ultimately, though, my main goal was to deliver the best possible conclusion. This is the only time we’ll get to finish this version of the story, so it had to be exceptional.
“So it’s hard and it’s very emotional, not because it’s sad, but because it’s beautiful.”

In season 15 of Call the Midwife, the midwives and nuns faced difficult cases, including those involving rabies and slavery, while also navigating significant changes in society like the rise of the Women’s Liberation Movement.
The characters have faced personal challenges as well. Rosalind created distance between herself and her parents to safeguard her romance with Cyril, and Sister Veronica surprised everyone by expressing a longing for a child, which could change her path as a nun.
More drama unfolds on Sunday night’s episode as Sister Catherine realizes a baby is missing from the nursery. Meanwhile, Sister Julienne shares surprising news with the Turners and Sister Veronica about Christopher’s father – a dangerous gangster in Hong Kong nicknamed ‘The Cormorant’.
Cyril shared with Rosalind that his divorce will be complete by the end of the month and asked if she’d like to join him for a weekend getaway to celebrate.
