Recently, the future of Nonnatus House has become more and more doubtful on Call the Midwife.
With increasing financial challenges and the ongoing modernization of the National Health Service, many people are questioning its long-term sustainability.
As Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne) hinted, the central question of season 15 – which starts on Sunday, January 11th at 8pm – will continue to be a major focus throughout the series.
She explained that it seems they will need to comply with the requirements of both the National Health Service and the local council. One specific request is that the nuns stop wearing their traditional habits and instead wear standard uniforms.
While that’s understandable on its own, it points to a larger issue: Sister Julienne views the nuns as missionaries dedicated to helping the people of the East End, as Agutter explained.
As a nun, she understands her primary duty is to God, which is more important than any earthly authority. The nun’s habit isn’t simply a uniform; it represents her dedication to serving others and reminds her of her purpose. However, she also feels a sense of being unwanted and unneeded.
Agutter explained that closing Nonnatus House would mean losing many of the vital services it provides, creating a difficult problem.
But Sister Julienne can’t fight that battle alone, instead turning to Trixie as her “spokesperson”.
She says there’s someone on the council who is strongly opposed to having nuns involved, and it’s hard for her to communicate with that person.
Trixie is helping her, and she’s happy Trixie returned from the US to support her in this way.
Helen George shared that the uncertain future of Nonnatus House is a storyline she personally connected with.
As a longtime fan, what really struck me about this recent storyline is the pressure on Nonnatus House – and the wider NHS at the time, honestly. Seeing the nuns forced to potentially choose between their religious life and continuing their vital work was incredibly tense. For years, this threat has been in the background, something we’ve seen building, and now it’s finally come crashing down on them – it’s genuinely terrifying to watch.

As George pointed out, Trixie possesses the necessary traits to significantly improve their chances of surviving.
She has so many great qualities, but I think her determination really stands out. Once she sets her mind to something, she’s unstoppable. She’ll fight for it relentlessly, and she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. We especially see this in the current series, where she consistently challenges those in power, even though it clearly makes her anxious.
She feels a lot of responsibility for Nonnatus House, and I admire how determined she is.
Season 15 begins after the 2025 Christmas episodes, where the experienced midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House traveled to Hong Kong to provide medical assistance.
Season 15 of the show sees the Christmas story unfold between the warm Far East and a snowy London neighborhood. According to an official description, Sister Julienne is feeling optimistic about what’s to come for the Order.
“After years of battling change, she decides to embrace it, work with it, and see what love can do.
A fresh energy runs through season 15. The series begins in 1971, with some of the midwives adopting the ideals of the women’s liberation movement and protesting outside Nonnatus House.
Throughout the year, our team has worked on a variety of challenging cases, including those involving premature births, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis, and instances of modern slavery.
